"Alternative Media" - Who's watching it?

What's a good one to start with?

I took a peek at th X-men stuff, but it was from well after the comic jumped the shark.

It's mind-boggling how many times that groups ages, and relationships have been revised.

By "the X-Men stuff" do you mean ComicBookGirl19's Youtube channel? She's done two "Epic History: X-Men" docs so far and is working on a third. I found them to be quite good so far. Both are available on Vimeo on Demand and she covers both before and after the said shark-jumping. She covers both comics and many movies, quite heavily and in depth, and is also not tough to look at. Take a look at her "Zealot" CosPlay from her last calendar, for example:

ThrowbackStudioz uncanny x-men 1. I think it was Rise of the Phoenix.
The production looks good, it's just that I lost interest not long after Wolverine showed up.
Everyone went from being enhanced, to being Superman. X-Factor might have been nice.

Ah, got it. The actual X-Men webseries, not commentary about the comics.

I don't think that I've mentioned this one yet; "One Hit Die." It's another comedy fantasy series on Youtube and they've done a full season already, but are also now releasing their new movie "Legend of the Lich Lord" in pieces.

Damn. They cancelled the "Natural 20" Kickstarter again. That means it's very unlikely to ever come up again. Pity, the original was one of the better shorts that they had done.

Let this be a lesson, if any of you ever want to try and do something like that yourselves. Don't include a 'poison pill' in your funding campaign. In this case I think that the inclusion of the board game torpedoed their Kickstarter's chances of success.

I don't think that I've mentioned "Glitch" yet, but I should. If you're an old school 8 bit gamer, you'll likely laugh your butt off. A couple of the actors might look vaguely familiar. Conner Marx played the 'Imaginary Cosmonaut' in season one of "Z Nation" and Jesse Lee Keeter, the lead in "Glitch", shows up as a bit player in various shows, like the last season of "Grimm." It's funny as hell and it looks like they're getting ready for a second season.

Dead Gentlemen Productions and Zombie Orpheus Entertainment has launched the "season 0" of "Gamers: The Series." These are a series of shorts that are intended to lead up to the first full season. They start with a clip that tacks on to the end of their movie "The Gamers: Hands of Fate." The second tells us what has become of one fo the characters from their original movie "The Gamers", from back in 2002. The second is rather seasonally appropriate.

Something interesting is happening in the world of fan films, which tend to fall into the "alternative media" category. CBS/Paramount Studios is suing Axanar Productions over their million plus dollar fan film "Star Trek: Axanar." It has set off some serious nerd rage on Facebook.

Information on the lawsuit (Alec Peters actually found out about the suit by reading this article):

*EDIT* Here's a link to the proof of concept video that they made: "Prelude to Axanar." You might recognize a few faces:

That's a pretty good video. I don't understand why these large production companies get so butt hurt over this. They should absorb them and make the product, clearly there's demand. They need to be more 'iTunes' and less 'Napster' with technology, meaning, embrace it and make it work, not go all Blockbuster and slowly die off as people move on.

The movie, that the video was basically an advertisement for, is the passion project of a group that includes a bunch of Hollywood professionals. As you can see it includes a bunch of recognizable B-list actors. The effects are done by people who worked on various past Star Trek projects for CBS and Paramount Studios. People who are working on the project full time are being paid, but not at their normal rates.

I figure that they're going after Axanar, but not the many other fan projects, because it's being made to a professional standard in a year they're releasing the third movie in the reboot series and a year before CBS launches their own streaming service, that will use a Star Trek series as its tentpole production.

Yeah that makes sense. I did recognize a few of the actors. Guess they'll drag this into the courts as long as they can until the 3rd movie is out and the streaming service goes live. Then it will either be forgotten or blown up.

If they drag it out at all, Axanar is dead. They don't have the money for a legal battle, even though Alec Peters is also a lawyer.

This might have a counter affect and bring attention to it. David vs Goliath and all that.
Could bring them more of an audience?

It could, in fact the news has reached further than their Kickstarter and Indigogo campaigns, but the production budget doesn't have any "fat" in it because it's not being made for profit. All the funds they've received have been earmarked for use.

Here's another one, this time made in Ontario; "HapHead." The year is 2025, there are wage slave "industry zones" in which environmental and employment laws don't apply, and video gamers can learn skills in-game via neural induction.

Two new productions coming down the pike:

Season 3 of "JourneyQuest" from Dead Gentlemen Productions and Zombie Orpheus Entertainment. If you haven't seen seasons 1 & 2, I can point you in the right direction:

... and the 4th movie in the "Mythica" series, featuring Kevin Sorbo, just dropped their Kickstarter too. (The previous ones are being marketed through Wal-Mart, among other places):

I just did a little calculation, that blew my mind. I calculated "The Big Bang Theory" to cost about $6M per episode; $4.7M just in the top 7 actors' salaries. That's over $270,000.00 per minute. I compared that the JourneyQuest, that wants to fund at $420,000.00 for about 80 minutes of show, because they're actually trying to pay their people at least minimum wage (I'm told $10.00/hour for everyone from the stars, down to the guy who fills the Craft Services table). That's about $5,250/minute. Holy crap! JourneyQuest season 3 would cost about the same as a minute and 33 seconds of "Big Bang Theory"!
