"Alternative Media" - Who's watching it?

Yacht Rock.
These are pretty awesome if you are a music fan that enjoys the smooth music of the late 70s and early 80's (Doobie Bros, Loggins, Toto, etc).
Some truth, and a lot of exaggerated/funny fiction in each episode.
Not sure if i can pick a favorite episode but the one where Michael Jackson has Eddie Van Halen play on his Thriller album stands out in my memory...
But- watch them all from the start if you can...the characters of Michael MacDonald, Hall and Oats, and Kenny Loggins are amazing and progressively better through the episodes.

I'm really hoping that this one gets funded. It's being captained by Thomas Gofton of Lynnvander Productions, who started GenreCon in Guelph a while back. It's going to involve actors from Ontario, BC, and Seattle, Washington, and is being written by Andy Dopieralski of Seattle (one half of Two Bards Productions). It's called "Natural 20" and is the sequel to last year's "Natural 1." Here's a link to the Kickstarter:

... and a link to where you can watch the original, "Natural 1":

*Full disclosure* I'm a Patreon supporter of Two Bards Productions and was one of the Kickstarter supporters for "Natural 1"/"Humans and Households" two years ago. I missed my chance to meet Andy and Scott when they were in Guelph shooting those two videos, two years ago, when I went to Guelph and delivered a piece to Joanna Gaskell of "Standard Action", on location. I don't want to miss another chance ;)

I'm of two minds about this one. On one hand I think that when big names beg for money using crowdfunding, they break the system that is meant for small independents. On the other I love everything these guys do, so I really want to see it.

Adam Tudyk and Nathan Fillion, pimping for their new web series "Con Man":

They made their funding goal almost immediately after posting the campaign, breaking all previous records.

What the - how is this the first I'm hearing of this?

You hid under a rock all winter? ;)

You would likely only hear about it, if you were already supporting and reading about alternative projects. Regular media tends not to talk about this sort of thing, unless it's something like "Veronica Mars."

I guess there was room for me under TwistedKestrel's rock.... I did not realize the popularity, nor the quality. My limited experience with YouTube, for example, deals with: Music video, how to's, poker shows that I missed on tv, and stuff that my kid watches, mainly some manchild playing video games. Besides YouTube, where should I look for quality programming / series?

Some producers also publish to Vimeo but the best way to find good series, is to look at the various awards shows. You can also cruise Indigogo and Kickstarter, to see when new programmes are being funded. If you watch for the groups with a good track record, you won't generally go wrong.

For awards sites check:

http://seattlewebfest.com/

http://www.towebfest.com/

.... and there are many more sites out there. In my case I follow many of my favourite indie actors on Facebook (have a few as Facebook friends) and watch what THEY are talking about.

Oh, and many of these series/movies also provide digital downloads or DVDs, for purchase. For example:

Thanks Rob

You're welcome. Remember, though, that it doesn't work unless you support the stuff that you like. Even a buck or two can help, though sometimes the rewards make it well worth kicking in more. I generally go for a level that gets me a DVD though occasionally I'll give just a couple of bucks if I want to see something get made, but not enough to get into the US$30-$40 range of donation.

I'm already into "Natural 20" for $50.00, but will probably kick in more before the campaign is over.

The trend on "Natural 20" isn't looking good. They're half way through their Kickstarter campaign and just over 25% funded. That sucks. If you don't want to kick in yourself, could you share it with friends who you think would be interested? For some reason this isn't getting anywhere near the coverage in social media that "Natural 1" did, and that was easily funded.

Zombie Orpheus Entertainment is slowly announcing their "pilot season." Here's what they've got:

"Demon Hunters: Red Tape" - Based on the first movie that the guys from Dead Gentlemen Productions ever made, back when they were in college. The 1998 original was hopelessly amateurish, poorly shot, and funny as hell. This carries on from the original two movies after the former leader of team Alpha One, the preeminent chapter in the Order of the Celestial Torch, was essentially busted down to office boy.

"The Gamers: The Series" - (People seemed to like my suggestion to call it "The Gamers: First Edition", but they went with this instead) Another series that carries on from it's earlier roots. Anyone who has seen the end of the original movie "The Gamers", from back in 2002, knows that it ended a bit oddly. This is a natural progression from there.

"The Mirror Game" - Imagine how things would have gone if "The Goonies", instead of running into the Fratelli family, had found Yog-Sothoth or Cthuhlu. There's your premise.

"Brass" - Some Steampunk heroes follow their nemesis through time, to bring him to justice, and end up in a far future Hell (Seattle in 2015).

This one looks interesting too. I've been exchanging Kickstarter messages with one of the guys who is producing this movie and he was quite surprised to find out that there were other groups doing similar things.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/257801402/the-dwarves-of-demrel

The biggest thing about this movie is that they found an old school mine in northern Michigan, without rails or supports, in which they can shoot. this will make it look more authentic.

Here's another one that will be coming out soon (July 7th), on digital download and DVD. It's a documentary about the Superman movie that Kevin Smith ("Clerks") wrote, starring Nicholas Cage, that was already in full production when it was dumped. The website is obviously incomplete, but should be live soon.

And now Dead Gentlemen Productions has gone live with their Kickstarter for "The Gamers: Dorkness Rising" being remastered for Blu-Ray. Well actually it's more that they're finally producing it in the format in which it was recorded. If this goes through there would hopefully be a bunch of additional material (commentaries, other projects, behind the scenes...)on it disk as well.

The "Dorkness Rising" Kickstarter hit its goal in less than 12 hours. In less than 24 hours they hit their $21K stretch goal for a whole bunch of additional material on the Blu-Ray. In the first week they plowed through two more stretch goals and 9 milestones, and are more than half way to the next goal, with 20 days still left in a 30 day Kickstarter campaign. This movie is loved by geeks around the world, which the campaign is clearly showing.

*FULL DISCLOSURE* I'm in fairly frequent contact with Jen Page, who plays "Female Luster", and Scott C. Brown, who plays "Leo" and "Flynn the Fine" in Dorkness. Jen has a couple of my chain and scale pieces, which she'll hopefully be using in a couple of photoshoots later this year, and Scott has a chain coif I made, and we're in talks for me to make him a full chain shirt.

Well Alan Tudyk's "Con Man" has hit general release and the Kickstarter for "The Gamers: Natural 20" is now running its Kickstarter campaign, so I figured I'd revive this thread.

Con Man: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/conman

The Gamers: Natural 20: https://www.kickstarter.com/project...amers-natural-20-movie-and-cyber-run-board-ga

This Kickstarter is for an independent movie and a board game, based on the game that appears in the movie. It will be shot in Guelph as a co-operative effort between Zombie Orpeus Entertainment and Dead Gentlemen Productions, with Lynnvander Studios of Guelph. For added inducement the female lead of the film is a three time Sunshine Girl ;)
