Alternate choice to a VFR

I gotta say I was surprised you went from a VFR750 to a VFR800... I know giving up the 750 wasn't by choice, of course. Having never had any seat time on either, the 800 just never seemed like the same kind of bike to me.

This is a category that I spend a lot of time looking at. My current favorite for something used is a 2013+ Fazer8. Cartridge forks, (mostly) adjustable suspension... supposedly undersprung but I am a lightweight anyway.

I think the FJR1300 is a bit big for me. The VFR800 is probably at the limit of size that I'm looking at especially considering I'm gonna get luggage for it. The Ninja1000 and the GSX1250 look great. Similar weight to the VFR800. odd they have such larger engines and such tiny gas tanks. Not very touring friendly.

I originally was gonna find another vfr750 4th gen. However ones with lower mileage and in decent shape were hard to find. Also I was worried I was going to get one and constantly be comparing it with my old one. I figured "I had a great time with my 4th gen. It was the perfect bike. I shouldn't ruin the memories of it by buying someone elses."

So I asked around and a few owners of the 800's said the Fueling and VTEC transition wasn't as bad as everyone says. So I found one in good nick and I've been complaining ever since. lol.

How tall are you?
Do you do a lot of commuting on it, or mostly for touring?

What about the FZ series?
SV650?
Bandit 600's might be nice, but too underpowered for you?
Versys or V-Strom?
Or even a Honda Nighhawk 750?

Instead of 6th gen VFR, you should've bought a 5th gen OP. There's still plenty around.

I originally wanted a 5th gen. I looked at a few. All the ones I saw were either in rough shape cosmetically or had mileage that was too high.

Also the 6th gen was supposed to have better fueling, electronics, and ABS.

I would keep on looking if I were you. Expand your search radius if anything. There was almost nothing that I disliked about the 5th gen VFR. Was a bit heavy but that's about it. I think 6th is heavier.
As a replacement for it I considered Triumph Sprint at first and then Ninja 1000, however ended up with a SS instead. Ninja 1000 would be my choice today for a replacement but you're right about the range - it's not there.

I'm on a 2016 FJR1300ES now from my Bandit 1250, I should have bought this bike along time ago.
For a heavy bigger sport touring bike it tears thru twisties with sport bike ease and is a gem for long distance touring.
Two Wheels still has my old Bandit for sale lol.
Go there and low ball them, ive upgraded that beast to to nipples.

The Silver one with 75k? They're asking a bit much for that mileage.

It's beautiful btw. Looks well kitted up.

I've had a Ninja 1000. The gas tank is by no means tiny, it has decent range.

I haven't ridden a gen6 VFR800, but I LOVE the gen5 (1998-2001) VFR800, so much so that after buying a CBR1100xx, a BMW K1300S, and a DL650, I had to buy another gen5 VFR800 because I missed it so much.

I'd ask around and see if someone will let you take a gen5 VFR800 out for a spin.

I might also suggest, if money isn't much of an object, looking at the BMW K1300S. It is a big-brother replacement for a VFR800; very similar body position but with nearly double the power.

You're right. Poor choice of words.

I guess I mean just in terms of relative terms. The VFR800 has a 22L tank (My 750 had a 20L) and these 1000cc+ machines have less than 20L.

But if they are more efficient and have atleast 300kms ranges than I won't complain.

If I found the "right" one I'd pick it up and sell my 6th gen. Easily.

I miss the Gear driven Cams. :(

This VTEC is dumb.

CBF1000 is 19 litres and I got 330 km yesterday on 18 litre fill up ....pushing it cuz we're travelling in remote areas next month and kid has quite short range and I want to know what mine is. I was pleased with that distance but that was not at slab speeds. ( only maybe 40 km )

If you want to try the CBF then pm me. I think you'll enjoy it as the other guy coming from a CB750 did.
PM Zoodles95 to see his feedback.

I still say that $4300 CBF1000 machine is the best value for what you are looking for. I did not like the VTec kick in either when I tried out the current VFR1200. Did not like the seating position either.
Much prefer the smooth acceleration curve on the CBF and more upright seating.

Long time ago I had a ninja 1000 - got around 250km/tank. The new ones are sweet bikes and really comfortable. The side cases are a joke though.

Yup that's the one ;).
Yea that price is high, the suspension is about as high end as you can get tho, she rides beautifully.
But at that price it will never move.

Funny cause a 5th gen VFR800 I went to look at, the guy replaced it with a CBF1000. He had nothing but good things to say about it.

What is wrong with the side cases?

There ya go...

I had never heard of the bike as it was never in the US and fairly rare in Canada but in Europe was a big hit...number 2 sport tourer in Germany in 2008 I think. It is no slouch tho...if you read that review

The Honda dual link/ABS braking is the best I've had. Been putting 120-300km a day and enjoying it more and more. 10k km between mid Sept and mid Nov last year .....had a lot of fun.
Up to you, if you want a spin meet me at the Forks some time.
I'm really shocked that $4300 machine is still around.

Geez he's down to $4100 safetied....no brainer

The Ninja side cases are really small. They might be fine for short trips, but I couldn't see it as a serious longer distance tourer. If there are aftermarket ones then sure, but when I sat on it at the bike show I thought they were embedded, so it would be tough to get different aftermarket cases - not sure about that though.

That FJ-09 is a comfy bike.
