If there were significant deposits, I doubt the US would have pulled out. The cynic in me says it took them 20 years to conduct a thorough geological survey of the country and then decided it wasn't worth staying there.
Why not let them? We let Saudi Arabia do that, and we arm them. All because we want their oil, we turn a blind eye.
Afghanistan has a lot of untapped natural resources. And the Taliban of today, are not those of the 1990s. They'll push to legitimize their government, because life must go on, and after 4 decades of war, peace isn't a bad thing.
If it means not sparking another war by giving amnesty to those who worked for the previous government, and they let women work which brings in more tax revenue and doubles their economic output. It is likely not the end of their world.
No problem with hem becoming an Emirate, not so sure about a Califate as that inherently rings trouble.
As for natural resources, they do have lots. They know where they are but are not equipped to do this alone. They will need huge foreign investment in order to commercialize. That would likely be a China thing (they'll go anywhere), I doubt European or American interests will go invest there unless they feel the human and political risks are stable.
Aren't they Honda/Hero bikes? The Toyota Hilux of motorcycles. I don't hear anybody accusing Honda of abetting the TERRORISTS.
...but yeah, I always refer to motorcycle newsgroups to answers to complex socio/political issues
Where else would you turn?
Good luck with your ride in the desert. Thoughts and prayers
