Advise on buying a new bike

Race prep? Is a trials competition called a race?

Other somewhat related questions. Is it possible to sit on a trials bike? How fast will a trials bike go with stock gearing?
You need to come out and try riding one, then it will become very clear what it's all about very quickly ;)

Those are amusing questions. :coffee:
Well trials was always advocating for a trials bike over a dirt bike for some people that rode trails. I was interested how they performed outside of their element. Could you realistically get away with a trials bike as your only dirt bike (probably not for most people).

As far as race, generally I think of racing as the fastest and trials comp as the fewest errors.

Try following Jordan Szoke when he is blasting through the woods or a gravel road on his TRS and I bet you will wish you had a much faster motorcycle ;)

They make lousy trail bikes, esp if you are riding with people on enduros. You will very quickly run out of suspension and the gearing isn't suited to hang with the other guys. Some of the manufacturers sell larger fuel tanks (stock is 3l) and seats that velcro in place, but they really aren't successful. Just my opinion.

Only if you want to stand up on the pegs......all....the....time, and deal with low gearing.

Fine for a trials competition. A day out riding with your buddies, not so much.

I'd equate it to riding to Alaska on a Hyosung 250. Could you in theory? Sure. Is it the wisest decision? Nope.

You live on the flatland :|

Go to a sand pit with a bunch of MX riders and they will be in awe at where you put new tracks.
I figured out how to relate it, have you ridden a Honda Quad? Trials bike has almost the same gearing and speed capability given the 2 litres of fuel range you would normally be carrying.

Modern trials riding is way faster then you are imagining, you have a time limit to complete an event and I have been in all out races between the sections in Ioco to get to the line up for the last 4 sections, then you and the guy you kept behind you on the trail are losing time points at the same rate. (Ioco loop is about 2.5k of terrain you would find extremely difficult to ride on an enduro anything, the sections would be harder yet)

and yes you need to carry a tire pump because 4psi is great for going over $%^& but terrible at high speed.

Totally agree with you Trials. But he isn't asking with regards to all out CMA competition. I'm pretty sure he is talking about cow trailing.

Last time I rode a dirtbike 20 years ago I spent the full day up at the Raglan pits with friends blasting through the woods and such.

I do not wish to stand on my pegs for a full day of pleasure riding.

Greyghost, I think you'd find a trail bike, enduro is good for trails. And a trials bike is good for what its intended. Sure you can make anything work, but sometimes its just too much work.
Fire roads and long clear gravel paths are a nice place to take a breather and sit. You can spend all day standing on the pegs , but its pretty physically tiring. Different horses for different courses.

There are exceptions to the rule. The Tenaci-Wong 150 is a great bike. Lifan motor makes it super reliable, plenty of power and geared a little higher than a pure competition trialer.A full seat is also available. I think they are a little over$5000.

It also doesn't have that new bike smell that lingers around for a long time after driving away from the dealership.

As some others have said, You probably won't notice the difference much compared to a 1-2 year old.
The novelty of the "Brand New" will wear off pretty quick.

I remember rolling off on my BRAND NEW Ninja 300 , only to go to a coffee shop 10 mins down the road, looking at the other SS and then regretting my purchase ! :p

Are you dead set on new?

There's going to be a lot of fire sale prices on motorcycles (and probably supersports in particular) in very short order when people realize they can't afford their toys anymore.
Still waiting ... nobody selling their toys :D ... or the toy i want specifically :D

Are you searching properly, or hoping something in a 20KM radius drops into your lap?

Because I just did a cursory Kijiji search for R1's with a 250KM search radius and found several.

If you can afford it, just do it. It's not just a smell, it's not just the experience of the first ride(purchaser never gets the first ride anyway). Knowing the exact history of the bike. Knowing 100% for a fact, that it has never been down, never been abused, doesn't have police looking for it "in the 6ix" etc. These things all make it worth it to buy new. Also, if you're any good at investing, you could probably find a more profitable way to use that stack of cash, when Yamaha is going to give you the bike @1.99 for 24 months.

where and how is one getting 1.99% for a Yamaha? Just looking and all rates are 7% or higher

I was told I'd qualify for platinum rates on the t7 2.99%.
