Advise on buying a new bike

Hypothetical question...

But could someone purchase a new bike, and then ask the dealership to deliver the bike to your residence still in the crate?

Assuming you would then register and plate it yourself.
Hypothetically speaking you could pick one up in Montreal on its way to Alberta from the factory.
... and have the shipper almost load 2 of them on your truck by accident.

Motorcycles in crates are usually quite....disassembled.

They are not the "pop open the crate, undo some straps, roll bike onto ground, add gas and oil and go for a ride" scenarios that many envision.

I speak from experience....I've delivered lots of "toys" (including motorcycles) over the years. What condition the bike is actually in inside the crate is way different than most people think.....take for example, these ones I delivered a few years ago. Look at the size of the crate - those were 2 Ultras.

My point being....the "just take delivery right out of the crate" scenario isn't likely to as much fun as some think it is. The dealerships often do a TON of work before you ever see your new bike.

True true.

But for some, the joy of assembling your own bike fresh from the crate would be pretty sweet.

nice track stand do you want to pay 400 extra for it?
If you can't put it together from there don't buy one.

AFAIK a brand new machine does not need to be certified as long as it is on the approved list.
It's for making sure a used vehicle is safe on the road.

that could be true
but a dealer is not going to give you a motorcycle in a crate
with a fit ownership if they haven't looked at it

they also need to submit docs to the manu to start the warranty
part of this is the PDI inspection

may be able to find a dodgy dealer to do this
but your going to be getting an unfit bike with questionable warranty status

this is all a waste of time anyway, as usual
Trials' tempest in a teapot over his personal experience that relates to virtually no one

"with a fit ownership if they haven't looked at it"
No they certainly will not because you just plated it, that's what an ownership is, it comes with the plate!
@J_F How do you manage to invalidate actual live experience?

Unless you have a really really good relationship with a dealer you aren’t getting a new bike in a crate. Too much liability. Don’t need a safety or PDI to license it but the liability is still there. Some racers would likely be able to get one in a crate, again goes back to the relationship with the dealer.

Most bikes are shipped complete other then bolting on the front wheel, handlebars and a couple odds and ends. Fill with fluids, test ride and PDI is done. Not a whole lot of work.

OP sounds like he's on the ball and will ignore this nonsense
has nothing to do with him purchasing a new YZFR1

I'm gonna do the same, thread is infected with Trials' BS

Or a defunct store inventory, how about that, impossible to happen right.
BS yourself J_F for not understanding import sales and registration in Canada.

Dealers are obligated by their dealer agreement to inspect the vehicle and there is probably a check-box to click when submitting the beginning of the warranty that they've inspected it and all is in good working order.

Can a dealer say they did and ship you a bike in a crate? Most won't want to do that, but some would. Can you as an end user: fill and charge a battery, put the mirrors on and fill it with gas? Probably. The most challenging part would be getting rid of the crate, which is typically a steel frame wrapped in cardboard.

Either way PDIs on modern motorcycles are something a shop would give there most junior mechanic to do, maybe even an apprentice or helper and not worth the money dealers charge.

Also people who don't purchase competition motorcycles might not realize,
there is no warranty on motorcycles used in competition.

I think there was a guy on the Mustang forum I’m on that bought an MV and took delivery in the crate. Did the pdi himself.

Not always. My 2020 Beta comes with a 6 month warranty. 7 months if you opt for the dealer race prep.

Race prep? Is a trials competition called a race?

Other somewhat related questions. Is it possible to sit on a trials bike? How fast will a trials bike go with stock gearing?

I'm afraid i'm gonna have to be happy with messing around in my driveway till i can get out out.

Yes.An observed trial is called a race in the pure sense (euro speak) You could sit on one,but it's not recommended.About 80/85.And that would be scary.Definitely no reason to do it.
