900,000 students coming in…

I'm afraid I have to disagree with this type of amnesty. While it may not be the student's fault directly, that isn't the issue -- it's that they arrived or were admitted using fake documents which would only be for one reason -- they were not admissible with real ones.

I say send them back without the 5-year prohibition to reentry. From there they can take the same legal path that others follow.

Bleeding heart liberalism is going a bit too far for me.
Agreed, but I'd state that the students 90% knew that they wouldn't get in through normal channels so they utilized fake documents to move forward.

Personally, I'd start as @GreyGhost says...see who signed the documents and follow the trail.

But...that's racist of course.

I believe this is one of those "low priority" things that will likely never really get enforced.
There is no political will either because implicitly all major political parties agree with it. (except bernier who is never getting elected)

Anyway Ima go back to motorcycling before I say how I really feel and get banned :p

Wrong. The number one reason is the documents that they came here with were a fraction of the price of legit ones and only took a half hour to procure at some apartment/storefront in a somewhat sketchy alleyway. They known better. They're too cheap to spend the money.

another article about declining trend

reminds me of the Ukrainians heading back home for a better life.

That’s pretty normal to share beds….on an effing camp FIFO job in a third world country!

Wow…I knew of overcrowding but that’s insane.

My understanding is that the majority are Indians taking advantage of newer Indians as they have no other options.

Just came across this article...

Now that the other parts of the world where this would be normal are here and established, watch for more of this .

The “ if any nieghbours asks, your a distant cousin living here with family till your established “ story is pretty common, you never mention illegal basement apartment.

Drive through north Mississauga and Brampton...many houses have 7+ cars from what I've seen. I'll hazard a guess that it's not because they're all family living there.

Lots of students looking for housing near georgian College. No idea percentage of foreign/domestic. Most are looking for something in the line of two bed, two bath, two parking for less than the average price of a 1 bed in the area. I thought the two baths being so common a request was ballsy. Starving students but unwilling to share a bath (or they are pretending to be two students and really they are 6 or more?).

I worked on a beautiful north Oakville home , the wife worked with my wife . Two illegal apts in basement , they owned a second home in Waterdown , illegal apt in basement , upstairs rented . Adult son lived with parents but his address was Waterdown house ( capital gains trick) and they were in the process of buying another house .
Condos are a bad investment because you only get one tenant , houses you get two maybe three .
I refused work on the Oakville basement because they did NOT care about fire egress or even alarms , they will smell smoke if it’s a problem.

In those situations, I have no problem with authorities seizing the house as proceeds of crime after a fire code conviction. Screw those greedy bastards. It isn't that hard to make things safe.

I agree in principle but at the same time the bar can be pretty high when it comes to codes (not just fire) and a truly legal basement apartment--there is an impact on availability of "affordable housing".

It is way more than multiple layers of drywall on the ceiling these days.... in many cases, depending on the home, it just can't be done with a reasonable ROI even when there is ample space etc.

I agree. The line would be hard to define. I agree that making the line at fully legal/licensed would worsen the housing crisis. I was more thinking of minimum standard. Something along the lines of fire resistant partition, linked smoked detectors throughout building and at least two possible exits from each dwelling unit as the bar. If you can't even meet that low bar, I have no problem with you getting your ass kicked.

When we were looking at houses prior to the renovation here we saw multiple houses with 2-3 apartments in the basement. When I asked about 'how legal are these?' I got a chuckle from the realtor.

I bailed on those. Pretty sure guy on my street has a handful of illegal basement tenants but he did have permits in his windows when he did the work.

I was standing at the office door of a property manager and overheard him telling an owner that he couldn't rent his parking spot to someone who didn't live in the building. He added "Besides, there's someone living in the van."
