900,000 students coming in…

Apparently the more we bring in, the more want to leave (percentage leaving 30% above historical average). They are most likely to leave four to seven years after arriving. How long does it take to get papers? That seems to be an important point not raised.

Normal process takes about 1-1.5 years. Accelerated...can probably have it within 6 months.

The immigrants wanting to leave are not the fresh boatloads, but the previous 'cohort' that came in, settled, got 'assimilated' to a point and now saw the $hitshow that's happening and figured 'the he$% with this'.

I know plenty of Polaks that are packing up and leaving. And a few of them regretting that decision very much because going back to Poland for a vacation, is much different than living there.

Some are happy, but the majority have a romanticized view of the motherland where things were awesome. Meanwhile, just like everywhere, costs are spiraling out of control, and it's not all unicorns and rainbows when they get there.

There's a diploma mill within walking distance from my place in Porcupine, Northern College. 5 years ago it was a local community college, training locals for skilled work in the local economy. Their tuition take was around $20 mil 5 years ago. Now they cater to They cater to students from India. This year they'll collect $68mill in tuition and could have done another 10Mil if they could find housing (they just refunded 500 students that were accepted for 2024 study because there is no housing left.)

My little rental is a tidy 1br cottage style house is walking distance from the college. In 2020, small houses in great condition were rented for $800-$950/mo. Today they are going for double that, more if you dare rent to students. The moment our listing hit Marketplace, local students started calling and begging -- they were offering $500/mo over our listing price.

I've heard the same thing. I was talking with a younger person that I was doing some banking with and we got chatting. In her case she clearly stated she rather be back home, but the family sold everything to come to Canada and now they feel somewhat "stuck" here. She also stated that there are many organizations that paint a non-realistic picture of life in "other" countries, they prey upon dis-satisfied people. It was an interesting conversation and I can respect her point of view.
It's advertised (glorified) in their local newspaper like its going on a cruise or a bus trip to come to Canada and start new life. They don't advertise how hard it is to afford $1800 a month in rent when you're only making $16.00 an hour.

In Brampton.. You'd pay 800-950 for a single room in a shared basement apartment. If you can't afford that.. You can pay to share a room with another.. in a shared basement apartment. I've even heard, first hand, of people sharing a bed in a room.. they take turns sleeping.

That’s pretty normal to share beds….on an effing camp FIFO job in a third world country!

Wow…I knew of overcrowding but that’s insane.

My understanding is that the majority are Indians taking advantage of newer Indians as they have no other options.

Here are some changes - maybe not so many after all...

Does that mean laid off teachers, reduced housing demand, shortage of part time workers.

Is this affecting U of T, Queens, McMaster etc or mainly degree mills with limited acceptance world wide?

During a tour of Montgomery's Inn in Etobicoke it was mentioned that one rented a space in a bed, not a room. Snuggle up buttercup.

In the bad times in Victorian England the really poor paid for a spot on a bench and they slept leaning forward on a rope. Doss house.

They are all idiots but cutting together clips from 8 years of stupidity you could make them say anything. They get a A for effort but its a meaningless result imo.
I was more focused only on the first part, but you’re right.

Food banks in Brampton are putting up “ no student” signs , food banks , churches and agencies are being overrun by international students looking for free food . What a mess .

On the topic of immigration exits , sure if you were a dentist in SiriLanka, you were a doctor. But your not getting to practice here so you take work you qualified for . Yea it’s gonna suck .
Most annoying are the Brits , it was so much better over ‘ome. Are you moving back? F no…….

I saw the same thing in a small city up north. Kids were lining up a a church food bank and homeless shelters to get 'free' food and meals, as if it were some kind of entitlement.

I don't know if you can blame the kids, perhaps foreign students should have a registered agent be attached to their financial responsibility -- shop at the food bank and get charged for the value of the food.

Like a parole officer???

That's expensive for the tax payers

I’d like to think it’s just an unclear expectation, or maybe it’s just “ what can I get for free” . They aren’t alone , I knew of several folks bilking the system that grew up here ( and did not need services) taking what they could .

It’s disheartening, because a side effect is people giving , start picking other places to put their efforts ( and cash)

Many 'old stock Cdns' are also third and fourth generation welfare mooches. While in labour and delivery the teenage mom on kid three can tell you exactly what 'new baby' is worth monthly. Its a lifestyle choice.

Perfect polar example is north end Hamilton , one grade school has 38 different languages, its an immigration settlement hub. Yet the new canadians work two of three jobs, move to a better neighbourhood for better work and opportunities for the kids. Then there are 6th gen north end. Dont get me wrong , I have friends living there are there are some wonderful people , and some lifers on the system. Like everywhere

I'll put money down that those #'s are considerably less than the "new" moochers.

I nursing friend did a Uni project on hamilton schools. Two schools within a few blocks with different catchment areas. Pregnancy rate at one school was multiples of the rate at the other school (can't remember the number, somewhere between 4 and 8 x iirc).

While the feds are the main culprit IMO there needs to be some blame on the provincial government(s) both past and present.

The entire idea that private mall colleges exist as-is today is a problem IMO. Even more so if they are handing out paper that does not meet the college standards of the province. If their credits and credentials do not meet the college standards (are recognized and transferable) well IMO they should not exist or should just be training centres that hand out a certificate and REALLY should not be a channel for international students. I have no issue with private colleges but they should have to meet (or exceed) the SAME standards public ones. Add to this that if you look up the DLI list (Designated Learning Institutions--schools approved by the territorial or provincial governments to host international students), it is packed with shifty (and most without the f) mall colleges. Now many do not qualify for post gradate work permits (regular colleges and universities typically do) they still bring in many many thousands to foreign students and for the most part it is just a private money grab.

Here is a list (a searchable example), you can search Ontario (or other provinces) and if you select non-pgwp....

I lost count, the number is large. There are some legit (and respected) places but most are shifty without the f.

I also no many people (not international students) that saw these as an education short-cut only to find out they spent five figures on a "diploma" no-one recognizes.
