51st State? Or not.

We are reliant upon treaties, agreements and the honour system when come to our sovereignty.
We are incapable of defending it so we exist at the pleasure if every other nation that can take us in a fight.
If the orange man decided tomorrow to annex the "Great White North" there isn't anything we could do to prevent it.

except it doesn't really work that way look at Afghanistan and every other country that's been invaded if the populace doesn't want it then the invasion doesn't stick

Why don't we separate the covid talk into another thread?
I am trying to point out the differences of response from our nations is indicative of why I wouldn't want Canada to become the 51st state. The US, and Trump's in particular, response to the global pandemic resulted in three times as many US citizens dying from covid as Canadian citizens per capita.
When you add economic status to the graph I posted you would see the lower wage earners did a lot worse in the US than in Canada.
That response is very pertinent to the discussion. It shows there is some stark differences in our nations.

You say that, but trump wasn't in charge for the bilk of covid

You really believe Canadians would fight an American invasion the way the Taliban did? Trudeau is taking all the guns away and has weakened the military to the point the Texan national guard could stomp us out like a cigarette butt. I for one welcome our new orange overlord.

There aren't enough here who would/could stand up to anything.
We're too comfortable and far to "civilized".

Can you even imagine a scenario where the federal gov't would hand out weapons to the citizenry a-la Ukraine..?

Canadian style would be to issue a terse statement, write letters and "maybe" boycott Disney.

No, but the verbal diarrhea that came out of his face sure poisoned the discussion... and so the response, WHEN HE WAS IN CHARGE.

Are you trying to defend Mr. Trump's response to the global pandemic that was covid? He took a bad situation and made it worse, a LOT worse.
Watch how quick the hostages get released when trump takes office

Trudeau is taking all the guns away
I keep hearing stuff like this.
I'd like to remind you that IF the US military comes across the border, THEY GOT TANKS AND THE BEST AIRFORCE EVER. They got this bomb that explodes once, blasting out a HUGE cloud of petrol, then explodes again KILLING EVERYTHING THAT BREATHES FOR 2 SQ KILOMETERS.

... and here's you standin' there with a 5 shot .223 with a bunch o' crap hanging off the rail.

i know where you can buy legal 8 shot Garands if you want to give it a go

We've all heard that you don't attack Russia. It never works.
We have the same defense... keep backing up till their supply lines fail.
That's why Toronto isn't the capital city.

According to Trudeau we are in a "Postnational" country... what is there to fight for? What difference does it make to peoples day to day lives if another nation rules over us?

To be fair... Trudeau hasn't actually taken any guns away.
Every single one of the guns "banned" that was in private hands is still in private hands.
True that but the objective of the action is to discourage private citizens from gun ownership.
They are making headway in that regard tho.

I seriously doubt that.
If anything it's encouraged people.
Those in the "firearms community" double down on purchasing new guns every time the government passes new legislation and if you look at the data re. the number of new licenses issued... it seems as if the Liberal attempts discourage firearm ownership is backfiring

I’m with Gaoler , the number of friends getting PAL paperwork and RPAL is well beyond what I ever thought , getting it now while it’s “easier” . The Liberals may have increased sales without realizing what they did .

I wonder how many here, and in Canada, would take up arms to fight an invading US army (which I don't think will actually happen). I'm not sure what I would do if the call came to take up arms against a ground invasion...

Let's face facts. If they attack, we're pooched in the span of a few days. Then the 'resistance' would start with people / groups fighting back in sporadic firefights throughout the country, and attacking the US on it's own soil.

As an attacking force...very little we can do to stop the US from taking us by force.
