51st State? Or not.

I seriously doubt that.
If anything it's encouraged people.
Those in the "firearms community" double down on purchasing new guns every time the government passes new legislation and if you look at the data re. the number of new licenses issued... it seems as if the Liberal attempts discourage firearm ownership is backfiring
Every time gov't says something is banned/bad/illegal it automatically pushes the population toward it.

I remember a joke during Sunday mass once....'the church's greatest attendance and membership was when the communists banned it in Poland. It was the cool thing to do because it was seen as 'sticking it to the man'.

You can't have an election at the same time as a leadership convention!!
So take it on the chin and have the election. It doesn't matter who the leader is, they are doomed to be an also ran this time around. He went on vacation for a few weeks (on our dime) before his press conference. He could have gone lone ago and it would have been far better.

I think it's a "you can't fire me, I quit" scenario... lol.
It would have been nice to see JT defeated in an election, but this way he gets out before he's kicked out.

It didn't have to be that way. GG should have told him that she didn't care about his tantrum. Proroguing is entirely about putting JT above every citizen of canada (as has always been his path). If she rejected him, government would fall and new functional government would be reinstated much faster.

I wonder how many here, and in Canada, would take up arms to fight an invading US army (which I don't think will actually happen). I'm not sure what I would do if the call came to take up arms against a ground invasion...

Let's face facts. If they attack, we're pooched in the span of a few days. Then the 'resistance' would start with people / groups fighting back in sporadic firefights throughout the country, and attacking the US on it's own soil.

As an attacking force...very little we can do to stop the US from taking us by force.
Decades ago there were more police in New York City than members of the Canadian Military. I suspect that situation has eroded further. While we may be slightly annoying, this is a cat playing with a mouse. Given that the government never destroyed the gun registry (or passed it to RCMP before destroying the official copy), that is an easy first step for an invader to focus their efforts on the resistance.

Yeah, but who knows what back door deal(s) have been made... it's not like anyone would be surprised if it was revealed the GG was somehow corrupt or otherwise in the pocket of the liberal government

That is almost guaranteed given the way the process works.

JT-I am looking for a new GG. I will give you millions a year to galavant.
Prospective GG - Great. Sign me up
JT - If I ask you to do something, will you apply independent thought, logic or consider the effect on the citizens before completing the request?
Prospective GG - Well, that seems to be what the job would entail. Why would you pay millions for a roll with no decisions required. That sounds like it should barely be a minimum wage. It should probably be a contract job where they get paid $1000 to sign off on a decision a few times a year.
JT - F off. Next.

With the more determined enthusiasts absolutely.
However the more casual shooters have been turned off buy the changes and other than the small percentage that are taking offense to the changes and jumping through the hoops more out of spite than a genuine interest in the sport there are fewer new faces joining the fraternity of shooters.
Its like you are saying that the sport of motorcycling is growing as most of your motorcycling acquaintances have been buying more than one motorcycle of late.

I'll see if I can dig up the RCMP stats on the increased number of new licenses issued which kinda contradicts the idea that increased restrictions are scaring people away from firearm ownership.
The one thing I've noticed of late is that unlike in the past where people just shrug off things the feds do to restrict people or garner more control... More and more people are thinking the feds are going a bit too far with some things...
Things like the freezing of bank accounts belonging to protestors...
Also... the general public... even those with zero interest in guns and even some "anti-gun" folks are no longer buying the notion that legally owed guns are the problem.

Look at it objectively.
There is literally nothing in the latest legislation or OICs that addresses the criminal use of firearms.

This government lied to EVERYONE on this file.
As to fewer people joining the fraternity of sports shooters.... I dunno... the waiting list to join my club grows every month... as does the lists of several other ranges I know of... Anecdotal I know, but... 'Seems to support the idea that lots of people are interested in shooting sports despite the government's efforts

Lack of available shooting ranges is probably killing interest every time I look at one they have years long wait list and I don't bother joining. Luckily I have a big enough yard I can shoot at home

US firearm sales tend to go higher when the Dems are on there way in and track down when the GOP is on their way in. Not a perfect correlation but there is a pattern. Also matters how anti or pro either is.... the more pro, lower sales... the more anti, higher sales. While it might seem counter intuitive the reality is if there is no anti pressure there is no need to run out and buy, you can do it tomorrow. In a high anti environment get them while you can.

No reasons to believe it is all that much different here.

It wasn't known that the situation south of the border was going to happen until a couple of months ago. It wasn't apparent how bad it was going to be until a couple weeks after that. We still don't really know how much is bluster and how much is serious.

And, yes, perhaps Trudeau should have resigned and had the leadership convention some time ago. Hindsight is 20/20. It wasn't thought that the Americans were going to re-elect the orange blob. But, they did.
The Liberals/NDP pleading ignorance at this point is both moot and irrelevant.
Everyone around here, and lots of people in the U.S. knew that the race was going to be neck and neck.
For Canada, it didn't matter whether Trump or Kamala were to get in, both were expected to, and had pledged to make big changes to foreign policy. The Democrats aren't particularly known for their open trade policies, and Kamala would have had something to prove.
Trudeau completely ignored what was going on south of the border, instead of making sure that we had a strong government to welcome the new U.S. President.
Face it, if the Liberals had been leading in the polls, we'd already have a new government. Doing what's right for the country AND what you're paid to do, is a no brainer. Doing what's wrong for the country and what's advantageous to yourself and your elites, is disgusting. May they choke on their pensions.
