Over the last couple of years people in Ontario have come crazy buying recreational vehicles, including large trailers and pickup trucks to pull them. I suspect that if you can afford a minimum of $50k- $65k for truck and maybe $35 - $50k for a trailer that rising fuel cost isn't going impact your usage of the rig.
That said, I think in a couple of years we're going to see a flood of recreational vehicles of all types on the used market as people realize that they're just not using them as planned and that, overall, they're expensive to own, insure, maintain and probably a pain to store for the 50 weeks of the year when they're not in use.
A neighbor purchased an older 5th wheel trailer, then had to trade in their existing pickup for a larger model to pull it, it had expensive fridge repairs and the brakes were shot........... They purchased it for a years planned month long trip to Yellowstone and had it for 3 - 4 years in total. If you calculate the overall incremental cost of the truck, trailer, repairs etc they could have stayed in high end hotels for a fraction of the cost.
