I have a good infestation of Manitoba maple. Every year some are cut down and split for use to boil the syrup.
The energy is terrible from the Manitoba maple wood but it's cheap and plentiful for me. Ash production is more than from a hardwood but it is manageable.
Pork fat to the rescue
I had just got the 1st kettle to boil and I asked my wife to go get the fat pieces asap.
The audience was in disbelief as the kettle boiled over 2x before she got back from the house with it.
No boil overs after the fancy device was installed on a piece of electric...
1st year in 20 years with no kids. They are adults now and had adulting to do.
Did have some friends drive up with their kids to 'experience' the process.
And bonus points to anyone who can tell me what the wire hanging from the chain into the kettle is for. (See if anyone was reading)
I still hang individual buckets.
With 100 acres I cycle thru different trees every year and usually have 3 or 4 clumps around the property so running hoses for a hobby would be a pain.
The last puddle weld try on my original cast iron snow balled as the puddling process deteriorated the surrounding 100 year old cast iron graphite.
I am thinking maybe the idea of the copper bolt that is smaller diameter than the hole itself and peened off to surface.
If it isnt 100% sealed...
I will snap a picture when I am at the shop next. I brought it south to be warm for whatever repair method I decide to use. Didnt want to be trying to fix cast iron sitting at -10C.
It is a deep kettle so my default can be to just have less depth and hang the pork fat lower.
