Maple Syrup Boil Time

I am at 530 litres as of tonight. I will boil Sunday as Saturday is supposed to be rain and my setup is outside
I have 7 maples only tapped 2 this year. Probably tap another tomorrow if my big tree let's me down, I like to get at least 5l of syrup each season.

I've got two tapped. I'm retiring this year, so next year I plan to run a pipeline up the hill behind the house and get a bunch more. I'll drain it into a 200 gallon tank on a trailer and either set up a proper boiler or take it to my neighbour to use his setup.

cool, taking the kids to the maple syrup outing in rockton soon. looking forward to it.

for now, the closest thing we get to tapping, is running to costco to buy their kirkland stuff

I still hang individual buckets.

With 100 acres I cycle thru different trees every year and usually have 3 or 4 clumps around the property so running hoses for a hobby would be a pain.

I've always wondered about energy consumption. IIRC you have to boil off a lot of water to get syrup. 1:40?. I like the dark so even more.

How much wood to burn for a gallon of syrup or how much propane?

BTW I go through a little disposable bottles of propane every couple of years. They've gone up so much I thought the current price was for a three pack. Nope. A friend gave me a few when they stopped camping and I got hit by sticker shock when I ran out.

I can understand why some people buy those refill cheaters. Not that I want to blow up my home.

What does sap from a Norway maple taste like?

BTW I've tried birch syrup and it tastes like molasses.

A lot of energy is used and most is wasted. But the results are yummy the big guys purify with reverse osmosis and only do the last bit by boiling.

Sent using a thumb maybe 2

I cantvtellbyge difference between trees. I have several maple species in the yard, they all produce maple sap. I've found the harder dpecies make more sap and have higher sugar content.

I have bever noticed a taste difference.

Birch syrup is stronger tasting and darker. It has more variation in flavors as the sap takes on some characters of the soil where the trees grow. The best stuff comes from areas north of where maples grow. Its also harder to make. A slight Carmel flavors is good, a strong molasses flavor is in poorly made stuff.

Good to see this being down here . I will only buy Ontario syrup from I source I can verify .
Quebec subsidizes the industry and holds vats for up to 7-8ys to control price and market. I like fresher.
My cousin was the chairman of the Ontario maple syrup producers association . (who knew this existed??) I learned a lot about modern production. vaccum pumps and holding tanks and big wide evaporator tables . Its become science , which is why its so awesome to see pots on tripods.

Inside tip , because some guy named Hans is selling liter bottles at the end of his farm drive, do not rest assured he does not have 45gal barrels in the shed and a bottling line , and syrup that came from somewhere far away.
Like the farm fresh eggs on the side of the road, yes farm fresh, probably not that farm. When they sell 10 dozen a day and have 5 laying hens , thats some creative math.

Yes i grew up on a farm, and there may be a religous connection to farming

We sled through hard wood bush strung with miles of plastic tubing.

Appareantly some squirrels have a taste for the tubing and can really eff things up.
