Maple Syrup Boil Time

Hojw much syrup results?
I have it down to 40 litres

I will not know final finished syrup results till I finish it on the stove.

Finishing the last bit is almost impossible to finish well on the open fire since the "still sappy/burnt to a crisp" transition is hard to hit

Tree selection plays with the ratio of sap to syrup so we will see what 2023 resulted in

Since I open fire burn I like to let it settle before I finish it to let crap drop out to minimize filtering.

But I anticipate 20 litres or so

That’s so awesome. My uncle did a few years of boiling but decided the effort wasn’t for him . I’m back to buying on the open market .
I will not buy Quebec syrup ever , at any price , they stock pile and control the release of product , you can be buying 5 yr old product . I’ll pay extra to a local farmer , if it’s one a know.
Don’t think for a minute “ Mennonite joeseph “ can make 1000 gal from a 20 tree bush lot . There is a fair bit of 45 gal barrels of industrial maple syrup being rebottled.
There is a guy outside Campbellville selling ‘farm fresh eggs’ off his front porch. There is about a half dozen chicken coops out back of the house. Not one of those old coops has chickens in it . They are farm fresh , just not that farm…….

A friend of a friend used to rent 100 sq ft out of the corner of multiple farmers fields. He'd go down to the food terminal, fill his truck with corn and spread it around to all of his "farm fresh corn" stands staffed by local teenagers. Controlled the whole territory and buyers were none the wiser. Farmers didn't care because they were growing cow corn anyway and pocketed the rent.

Similar for me except my buddy had a farm out in Oro Medonte years ago. He started a maple syrup business and basically said about half his product is just buying it from other local guys, slapping on his farm label on it, and 'farm fresh home made' mumbo jumbo...but not his farm.

2023 Annual Tree Blood Packaged

I have 6 large sugar maple trees, the are all open (not in a forest) so I get 50-100l of sap per tree. Didn't tap this year, but I usually get 350-400l, of sap total.

It's not really worth the effort. It takes 2 days for me to make 10l.

It tastes awesome, but I think I'll buy it from here on in.

First boil this morning.

Lesson: don’t work on two hobbies at the same time.IMG_0642.jpeg
