Canada Post - Huge losses

If I had unlimited money, I would change careers every three to five years or so. Find an old guy to work with and absorb everything I could from them. Don't try to be the master but 80% of master level is better than 99% of the rest of the population. I was lucky enough to get experience in a few areas but life meant I had to stick with a path to make more money. My preferred path would have me constantly at apprentice wages so money needs to come from somewhere else. I don't need yearly vacations. I am ok with (and actually prefer) something epic between jobs.
You don’t need unlimited money, just unlimited ambition.

Over a 40 year career, I changed careers completely several times. Telecom - executive for 15 years, self employed .com startup, 5 years, startup textile specialty business 10 years, banker 6 years, change manager 4 years.

I recently retired (again), but got a FIFO job offer out of the blue — I’m mulling that over as it’s on a when I feel like going basis and the money is stupid.

I've done it five times (some shorter, some longer). All of them were before I met my wife. Starting again and making decent money quickly requires stupid hours and leaves little time for others. While Postie sounds like it would get me in good shape, I prefer more skill based jobs and less trading wear on your body for money (although some definitely had a large component of that).

Interesting idea. But they would all need to have proper level 2 security checks etc.
Delivering registered mail, passports etc.
Typical government position. They can't do the job but make it illegal for anyone else to take over.

I can't see why a Power of attorney over mail wouldn't work. All it would take to get it federally approved is a ten-year study at $20 million. :(

In reality the private party would not be sorting or opening mail. Oopsies do happen but that happens with the regular carrier. This morning, I got mail that is addressed to someone blocks away. If it was next door, I'd just walk it over. Would that make me a criminal?

Might be true for someone with experience, what about someone with no experience who is 50+ just starting out in trades.
The big change is in the complexity of things over the years. A generation ago a person could fix their vehicle with a modest tool kit. Those skills were universal and a handyman was at least partly trained for other trades by at least having a knowledge of math, general physics and electricity.

Now too many are trained as a specialists and intuitiveness is dead.

Experienced tradesmen over 50 get hired easily. I hired 2 in the last 3 years. These days no certainty a 25 year old would stay on long term anyway.
That’s the problem…

I’m not experienced in the trades. I’ve done a bunch of home renovations including plumbing, electrical, knocking down walls, drywalling etc. But I wouldn’t say I can hold a candle to a proper tradesperson.

You’d be surprised what a handyman can pull in.

I had a some beers with a few 60+ year old locals this week, they’re pulling $50/hr on payroll or $40/ hr cash as handymen working for small builders and renovators These guys have all the work they can handle.

They could, but they need their workforce to up their game. CPC has a productivity issue, they need to increase by 30% using the same headcount to match Purolator.
What is the incentive to up productivity?

Does the union leadership want to lose 30% of its force and therefore income?

Does management want to admit by change that they've been screwing up for decades?

CP management has been into DEI for ages, Dumb, Expensive Inept

More politics than CP, but our ex PM that got caught with literal bags of bribe cash is being immortalized on a stamp. Obviously current bureaucracy worships that level of corruption.

On the CP front, ditching the incredible amounts of money they spend on making a constant flow of new LGBTQ, Fungi and Scumbag stamps would be a quick route to saving millions. If you want to keep stamps evolving to block counterfitters (is that even an issue anymore?), just use some randomly generated shapes that are easy for an optical scanner to compare to a database of issued stamps.

Self sticking or do you get to spit on them?

I have the same thoughts about the mint. What's the cost each time they bring out a new a quarter? Why do we need 50 different quarters?

The crappy banking partnership has launched. It doesn't seem compelling to put it mildly.

It doesn't knock my socks off. It would be good if it made CP more profitable but one still has to look at the mail issue being a loss magnet. If only one cylinder out of eight is working and doing the job you don't need a V-8, so redesign the engine.

Sort of like CBC, piss-poor management and workers that think they cannot be replaced.

Stop propping up what doesn't work.

I like the concept of having a national broadcasting network but not as an arm of the sitting government.

And why should they be funded with my tax dollars. It was always $1.4B and now they want $2B to $2.5B. Really? And then giving multiple bonuses to the top dogs at CBC who cannot produce a profit. Fire them!

According to the internet and not some forum, CTV does not get funding or subsidies from the government. Why can't the CBC do that? CBC has a viewership of less than 3% and that might be the problem, so fix that.

And if you want the CBC, take out a subscription like Prime or Netflix. Oh and by the way, the BBC has lost quite a few subscribers and their rate per year is something like GBP 190 or about $420.

There is only one logical step forward, Canada Post needs to take over The Bay. /s

Awesome. They'll drop off my stuff in the box mounted on the wall beside my front door just like the CP professional walker.

Bonus: they won't contribute to the trail across my front lawn.

We’ve been home all day and tracking said failed delivery attempt. No notification slip.
'failed delivery attempt'? that's not even an option for the courier

care to snip the tracking info?
