Canada Post - Huge losses

Does that mean they will be working the full shifts.. or finishing their set work load and just sitting around the depot dong nothing til it's home time?
It's called "Separate Sort and Delivery" (SSD). Most depots that have installed this system are crazy behind on mail delivery with many days of ail stacked up for large portions of their depot.

Postie arrives, mail has been pre-sorted. Still need to mark packets/parcels and sort them for proper delivery. Load your van. Away you go. Arrive at stop 1, get out, put on mail bags, load up, deliver a loop that comes back to the van. Load again, another loop. Drive same loops for parcel delivery. CPC has now also instituted an "On Demand Pick Up" for parcels/packets until 4pm for these depots. So, a postie may have to drive a long ways to do their pick up, turn around, go back to where they were and continue. All outgoing mail must be back to the depot before 5pm so that it can make it to the truck to the sorting plant.

When they've been building the routes, CPC has over reached in their estimations as to how much can be delivered in a day by 1 postie. Most SSD depots are refusing to work overtime to prove a point - hence the multiple days of mail piled up waiting for delivery.

I suspect that the people who were going home will just slow down and take all day to deliver.

That's more than likely precisely what will happen for non-SSD (see my post just before this one) depots.
I bust my ass out there, get told by supervisors to slow down when I walk etc. Why? 'cause I get to go home a little early as my reward. Punish myself for a "treat".

Questions for the posties….just noticed a new community mailbox 200m from parents cottage in Wasaga.

How / who do I call for a key or any info if their place is there and has a dedicated slot?

When our superboxes got reconfigured, iirc, weeks before they put a letter with info and new keys in the old box. I'm sure if keys were still in old box when the switch happened, they'd do door drop-off.

I think he was talking about posties finishing their route early and going home vs not going home early.
My question was whether they're actually working the full day.. or just hanging around killing time.

CP could buy an industrial unit in the bad/cheap part of each town and put tens of thousands of boxes inside the unit.

Sounds like the place on Pine Ave. in NFNY that sold beer. Pull up to the 12' overhead roller door and honk. Door opens, and you drive into a warehouse full of skids of beer. Tell the guy what brand and how much, he gets it, puts it in your trunk, and you paid him. Roller door on the side of the building near the back opened, and you drove out.

About Letter Carriers finishing their walks early. If I remember correctly, route measurements are done with a rep from CPC and the Cupw. Lots of variables are calculated. The volume of mail, amount of time to sort the mail at the station, stairs, distance, start/end of walk, mail rooms, apartments with walkthrough( deliver to each apartment) business vs residental. etc. What would a reasonable amount of time an average person would take to finish within the 8hrs. If you hustle and volume of mail is light you would finish early. Some Letter Carrier will skip breaks and lunch to finish early. Its up to Letter Carrier to manage their time. If you over your time and want to be compensated you of course need to state the valid reasons why. When I was a Letter Carrier, somebody took a picture of me in full CPC uniform smoking a cigarette. I had a long day!

And if you had to take a pee, there you were lounging at Timmies all day.

They will get keys for the new box in their old box about 2-3 weeks ahead of the new one being put into use.

If they put "force backs" into play again (complete your route and be forced out onto another), I can guarantee you that posties will stop at the cafe across the street or whatever instead of returning to the depot.

Part of the collective bargaining agreement indicates that once you are assigned your tasks for the day, that is all you are obligated to do. Yes, you can volunteer for overtime, but not be forced into it.

Big shocker. /s The weekend negotiations months before the next strike deadline did not produce a settlement.

CP wants cuts, CUPW wants security and says no union would accept the cuts.

Meanwhile there is a report due out on May 15 about what CP should look like if it wants to survive. Negotiations before that report is released and reviewed seem like mostly a waste of time.

I've been told that they have frozen permanent hirings. Good thing I dipped when I did. I feel sorry for anyone with low seniority.

Seems CP is trying to take advantage of the surging Canadian Pride. Just heard a ad on the radio from them about shipping Canadian, with discount pricing and Toronto specific pricing. Maybe this buy Canadian is the lifeline they need.

They are likely going back on strike in May. That will dissolve any good will they rebuild lol.

CP runs out of money by July.. without another "loan".
Hopefully that doesn't happen. "Loaning" money to a dumpster fire with no firefighters is just burning money in a Liberal wrapper. CP needs no access to taxpayer money until a path forward is determined and agreed to by those affected. It is bankrupt. Loaning it money just delays the inevitable by a few months.

Technically, we are still on strike, but were mandated back to work.
When the mandate ends we are still in continuing legal strike action if there is no new agreement.

I really DON’T want to go back on the picket line. I just want to work with some reasonable job security.

Do you have enough seniority to survive if they cut 1/4 or 1/3 of the posties?
