Bike run over by cab!

This one was in a parking lot, so I guess technically would have been 50/50 at fault. The first one was on a road and 100% my fault.

You are very lucky, as you were 100% at fault for both of those accidents. (The 50/50 in a parking lot is a myth).

So in either of those accidents if you did only say a couple hundred dollars damage, that you could have paid out of your pocket and never heard from again OR get the usual 30-40% increase due to the at fault accident for the next 6 years.
Example. Pay $300, its over
Go through insurance with a 30% increase, Estimate $100/month @ a 30% increase until the accident comes off your record= an extra $2,160 in premium.

Have you stopped for a minute and asked yourself why exactly you are doing a favour for this guy?

What has he ever done for you, other than run your bike over?

The only way I would ever accept cash in an accident is if there was some way I could be considered even slightly at fault by the insurance company. If I wasn't even in/on the parked vehicle, insurance all the way.

Its called courtesy, But that seems to go out the window once people get in their vehicles. I bet your the type that speeds up at merging lanes to block people from getting on the highway to......

When i'm riding in the car with my buddy every time!

Him: Don't let this guy in
Me: Why? He's trying to get on the highway!
Him: If you let people in front of you slow yourself down
Me: You are stupid and bad at thinking

Hopefully it all works out. I would have said the cabbie just bought the bike and got a new one. There might be hidden damage as well if the bike went over that hard. Did you take the cost of your labour and non-riding time into account?

Courtesy for for someone who just ran over your bike?

I am courteous all day long on the road, and especially when I was in a truck with a 53' billboard advertising where I work and I am courteous all day long holding doors for people, being polite, etc, because courtesy doesn't risk anything -- it is something you can do at no cost or minimal cost to yourself. Courtesy has nothing to do with putting yourself at risk to be ripped off by someone who already caused you damage.

I still say in a case like this it is best to leave it to the insurance companies to hash out. If this was still small town Canada where you could take someone's word, then maybe it is worth making a deal, but this isn't small town Canada anymore and most people's word isn't worth their breath to speak it.

As for my incidents, I didn't even offer to pay cash. I just gave my info and got back to work and it all worked out just fine.

Yes, do you think he did it on purpose?
If so, why did he stick around and not take off?
Its called an accident for a reason.
And most decent people will give the opportunity for someone to right their wrong.
My bike got backed over a couple years ago and the guy askede to get a quote and if he could he wild pay, I got my quote, he said he couldn't afford it and thanked me and told me to go through his insurance.
Not one problem I encountered and if put in the same situation I would do it again.

Everyone has their own opinions, some put themselves first and some like to help others out.

in the end, it was an accident, not a malicious act, give people the chance to do the right thing if they want, just make sure you cover your ass.

Decide fast. The law says if you don't report an accident within X amount of time you are a hardened felon. It's 24 hours for collision centre or 48 hours for the police.

You can report to police without making an insurance claim. I've done it 3 times.

Also, you have a year to make a claim. Or at least did the last time I looked into it a few years ago.

I'd go to a dealer to get a quote and get the cabbie to pay for it asap. If he gives any hassle at all I'd just call insurance. I say any because I've had many people claim they're going to pay it and then just screw me around until I end up making a claim anyway. Keep in mind that while your rates shouldn't go up I've had people tell me that they have a "claim free" bonus on their policy and even a not at fault claim eliminates that reduction for them. I think they were with State Farm.

For every person like you and the one that hit your bike, there are 10 others willing to run away.

I understand everyone should be given a clean slate but it's very difficult given how most people are complete jerks.

Completely understandable and with the way people are these days I would put money on more than 9 out of 10 people would try to screw you over for their benefit.
But that doesnt mean you shouldnt give the person the chance to right their wrong.
Its like paying it forward in a way, I'm sure everyone here would be singing a different story had they been at fault for a minor damage accident that they could cover with cash but the other person said "nope, ill just go through insurance"

Op, I understand what/why you did this. I sincerely hope it all goes well and you're back on your bike soon. Good karma to you.
