Bike run over by cab!

So, lets evaluate again. You have just stated that your bike is not rideable as opposed to solely cosmetic damage. Apparently a 1980s bike so the part hunting is somewhat your job and the project of get money out of someone mixed in..

Oh btw about Bikebandit, I have ordered from them and they are 100% legit and I would order from them again. However for old parts or hard to get parts, be forewarned that it will show "in progress" or like term for up to 20 days I think and if still not available by then then they automatically cancel the order. Listed part does not always equate to available. Just saying. Other sites are the same way.

Since its a cab driver I'd skip all the ******** & report accident & call my insurance company. Painless easy

The biggest +1 of all time.

Nothing against cabbies, but those guys are well connected and probably know the law on these circumstances much better than you!

Personally, I'd go the report and insurance route, no haggling, negotiations or heartache. Had this happen to me when my Duc was 3 weeks old. It too was hit hard-backed over. He wanted to negotiate, trying to convince himself and me that it was "at most a couple of grand". Well, $9,000 later we both had our answer, glad I went the insurance route, and it sucks to be him! And in my case it started as a hit and run...but I caught up with him and had witnesses.

Cabbie dropped off the first portion of the cash, $500. Enough to start work, more tomorrow he says.

You know now that you accepted the $500.00 you are committed to the Cabbie, be careful that he doesn't disappear now or refuses to pay the remaining balance!

Yeah - I foresee the work starting on the bike - the cabbie disappearing - the bike sitting at the shop half repaired for a few weeks and the OP throwing in the towel on collecting before repairing as the riding season wears on and the OP having to cover the rest of the bill of the repair to get his bike back in a reasonable time. Try proving anything with the parts off the bike at a shop too. Dont fool yourself, this cabbie is appearing nice but behind the scenes he has spoken to dozens of other cabbies as to the best strategy to screw you. They told him to pay you a smaller amount, promise more soon...watch it will be an even smaller amount .....and then drag it out as much as possible.

The cabbie is going to draw this out now hoping to win by exhausting you and putting you into a position of lesser power. You need to get all of the money today or you report it tonight.

Agreed. For your sake I truly hope the goodwill you showed this guy is not in vain. Looks like you are pretty much committed now. Hope for the best and plan for the worst. You're a better man than I Gunga Din!

Did you write him a receipt statement? Were there any witnesses present when he handed over the cash?

With amount still owing, signed by both parties and cabbies' drivers license number. That might stand up in small claims court.
