It always bugs me too when people make sweeping generalisations like that, but in this case, who is out there testing and validating these parts to help shoppers make a more informed decision about sourcing parts from China?
I mean sure, there are OE parts coming out of there, and they are fine, but that is exactly the type of validation I am looking for. If BMW or Honda say they're good enough for them, then of course their seal of approval will override the "China" stigma since these OEs have their own standards and their own reputations of quality for us to rely on. But the question is about those ebay specials from fly-by-nite companies that we can't tell apart from a hole in the ground. In those cases, the reputation of Chinese products is the only metric we have to evaluate the potential quality of these items.
There's a good reason why China has a reputation for producing crap. We all know the stories of drywall and childrens toys and even milk. In my old job I sourced parts from there, and I know first hand how they will cheap out in very imaginative ways if strict controls aren't put in place to assure quality. I've also seen how they operate in some cases (not OE shops) and I've purchased enough cheap stuff that didn't quite do what it was advertised to be sceptical of Chinese products.
Having said all that, I try to keep an open mind and avoid the stereotype if I can. If I can find a reliable source of information that supports the quality of one or another Chinese item, then that will go a long way to giving me confidence in that particular product.
But outside of OE brands, where are these reliable sources of information?
