wow really? that must have been really recent then, cuz i did a safety for my gsxr before selling it from it like 3 weeks ago :O, but the price i can confirm though is $40

and i think $20 bucks extra for the 10 day temp sticker.

i've done this with the past 2 bikes i bought.

showed up
inspected the bike
agreed on the price
paid the person.
signed over ownership
went to MTO and came back
plated the bike and rode home.
then safety cert it over the next week.

Wait...so no insurance is needed?

A safety itself costs $60-80 if it doesnt need anything...

Toyhauler quoted me xxxx for delivery plus safety so unless you can compete then...
You need insurance if you're going to ride the bike on the road, regardless of the plate status.

Get insurance first. Then just get a friend to ride it back for you - it's not a great distance. I would just slap on a plate from another bike. The odds of getting pulled over, or even having your plate run, in that short distance is very unlikely.

Yea thats what my friend was planning to do but hes out of town, might be able to arrange something else but atleast I have some numbers now incase I need a tow!

I know I need insurance to ride the bike on the road but I was just wondering because it'd be a bit easier to get the sticker first and then get insurance then transfer the bike. I heard it takes a day for MTO to get the update on insurance on their computers but i'm not 100% sure.

Get insurance first, it takes less than 10 minutes, and that's if you take an 8 minute bathroom break.

rent a van for 50 bucks.

or better yet, find that nice man that lives in one, down by the river, with all the cheese.

You can get insurance before you get the plate or even having the ownership transferred. You can get your insurance company to fax/email you a temporary insurance slip. You then take this insurance slip and the ownership to the MTO, transfer the ownership to your name, and buy a plate. You then take these items to the bike, put your plate on, and ride away.

pick up van, pick up bike, take to shop, wait, take bike home, take van back.

van rental+gas+straps: maybe 100-125

safety: 50 bucks

Anyone have experience with buying someones bike and then having them do something to it before you pick it up? Like switch some components, take out expensive parts, screw around on it etc?

Going to check the ODO and make sure it doesn't change from when I pick it up, don't know any other ways I can make sure nothing happens to the bike while I get the plates
