I never gave a crap about any minimum wage job. Usually just show up to work high as a kite doing the bare minumum so I dont get fired. Somehow, doing so made me manager in 3 months

. I guess it's all about how the management views you. ie: get your **** together when the boss comes.
As for the security guard sleeping.. they all do it. My brother worked security for years, and there was literally a network among the 10 sites calling each other so they know exactly when the mobile supervisor is gonna drop by. They memorized his route and worked (and slacked off) accordingly. You get what you pay for, and the same goes for hired labor. In the family business we run, as soon as you notice a worker is going above and beyond, you reward him with a bonus of some kind. I'm sure the security guard has NO incentive to work harder than he is in the picture.
