Just to clear things up for myself. Is it ok to 'split' the lane between cars parked on the most right and the lane immediately left of it? I do that quite a lot in the city with caution (i understand there is a chance that a driver may still be in his seat and before you know it opens the door into you), i know cars will often do this if they feel they can squeeze through just before making a turn at a light.
Would a cop ticket me if he saw?

If you mean driving in the portion of the rightmost lane not taken up by the cars parked there, yes. It is a lane, and you are allowed to drive in it.

As I understand it, if someone opens their door and it causes an accident while you are doing this, insurance fault determination rules render them automatically at full fault - it's on them to check if it's safe to open the door before opening it.

I was told it's alright as long as the cars in the right are parked

Everyone seems to think that they are a good driver, or at least not a bad driver.

I honk when someone does something stupid, wrong or dangerous. Twice if it's stupid and wrong. Three if it's stupid, wrong and dangerous.

I'm hoping that people that I honk at start wondering about it and say "hey I'm not driving responsibly, I'd better straighten up my act!"

If people are honking at you, then you should start wondering...

+1

Just don't complain when this happens to you and it your fault.

You can say that now but I highly doubt that would be the case in the moment.

And the fact that if a car suddenly changed lanes, you would be at fault for the accident.

That's where you are wrong. Exact scenario took place with a friend of mine where a camry suddenly changed lanes and he tried to swerve but hit his left fairing on his rear bumper. Camry dude was at fault and insurance gave the rider $5k to fix his left fairing. So no, OP wouldn't be at fault for that kind of move from another vehicle.

Your story doesn't really make sense.... So your friend was illegally lane splitting and rear ended a car and the driver was at fault for making a legal lane change and your buddy was given $5,000 for a $500 fairing?

Oh, my bad. He wasn't lane splitting. But he was given $5k for a $500 fairing. I didn't believe him as well until he showed me the cheque from statefarm. Statefarm had actually offered him to buy the bike off him for $6k or take $5k to fix it. I know that sounds damn stupid but very true.

In flowing traffic I tend to reconsider my previous move if I get honked at. But if everybody is stopped and you're safely filtering to the front (ie. not close to nicking anyones mirrors) then it's them acting like a child; it's not about you.

State Farm wouldn't have given him a $5,000 cheque unless the damages were more than that.
Maybe there was alot more damage that he just didn't fix and bought a chinese set of fairings for $500? But insurance adjusters aren't stupid.

As I read this, I kept thinking it was a joke but no, this guys is serious! Really? Go back to riding school. ep1x you obviously don't have a clue. Riders like you give others a bad name, grow up.

Well all he did was go to snowcity and have them make an invoice of the damages. Which was the one fairing only and couple other small things like a mirror and air intake duct. Then an adjuster came to see the bike and that is exactly the options he was given. I have no idea what kind of adjuster he was because that payout just doesn't make sense. But that's what he got. Sucks for statefarm but he lucked out.

Man the 172 crowd is out again.

If you're gonna split, try to keep it to no more than a jogger's pace. Even a fender bender at that speed wont send anyone flying. That's about 1st gear idle speed, so you can hover with 2 fingers over the brakes also. A lot of people will argue it's illegal or that 172 will be thrown at you and that's possible, especially if it is deemed unsafe. The perception of safety is a key point here not only for cops, but for as you can see some conservative rider types who are eager to blame you for all biking's ills.

Also suprising cars provokes the most honks. If you come by slow and reserved you will find, like me, the honks are once a fortnight at most. Most people are also resigned to gridlock in Toronto so don't mind that you budded and jetted off the line, they know it made no difference to their situation. But the burbs are just now experiencing rage inducing gridlock and the thought of moving to the burbs to get home to their 2500 sq ft house in over an hour when it used to take 30 minutes not more that 10 years ago is a little too much for them to handle. They don't stop to consider the trade off you made for agility and speed, they only see that you're getting home before them! Cops are harder on filtering in the burbs too, Peel is a hub of cops who think their tougher attitude keeps crime low compared to Toronto. Kind of like the philosphy "if I encircle the house with salt no elephants will get in". For this reason they crack down hard on just minor things as filtering or 2 day expired licence stickers. It keeps the drug gangs out.
