Yet another stolen-SS-from-condo-parking: 2013 Kawasaki ZX636

Hi all,

Happened this week. Stolen, chopped through the chain, the alarm wasn't a deterrent, nor the FOB-secured parking gate or various cameras (including those pointed at my space).

Second time I've lost a ZX-6R to thieves so I shouldn't be too agitated. I added the heavy chain (around a massive column) thinking that plus the cameras would be enough of a deterrent but I was wrong.

Really, a supersport, especially a newer one, in a condo is just 100% going to be stolen. I've learned my lesson (took me two hits to figure it out) so no more bikes until I'm out of the condo. I wouldn't even get a new-ish cafe racer or something like that at this point.

If I get any updates for the police (who were 100% rude and acting very put-upon so far), I'll let you guys know.

To those who have nicer bikes in underground parking in Toronto: Just don't. Sept 2013 lot my 2011 ZX-6R and now less than 2 years later I lose my 2nd. Each one I owned for between 12 and 13 months, purchased new.

Condo + supersport = funding organized crime.

Ugh.

So what happened to the stolen VIN registry?

I'm very sorry to hear this. It's so sad that you can't even own a motorcycle when you live in a condo. Guaranteed low-lives prowl the parking garages to take what they want. I'm also convinced that Security guards that work at condos are paid off by thieves to keep quiet. My brother's 600rr was stolen from his underground garage a few years ago. He barely owned it for a year before they took it. Seems that cops don't give a crap about this issue. Good luck with your next bike purchase, when you move into a house.

Don't you know, once your bike gets stolen you're never allowed to buy another one

Can you please ask for the camera footage at your condo building and post a vid of the thieves as they steal it? I believe that is your best chance of catching them, albeit a small one.

Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice shame on....

Do you know we all pay for your bike right? Thanks to you our rate will go up again next yr.

I thought my post was already pretty contrite but you are right. People who get their motorcycles stolen play a role in increasing other riders' comprehensive premiums. Though how big of a role the bike owners play compared to the thieves...
And I honestly thought waiting for the condo to install cameras around my spot and adding the heavy chain on top of the audible alarm would be enough of a deterrent but I was clearly wrong. Not sure if my assumption was an unreasonable one.

and regarding video: my condo won't release it to me, understandably for privacy reasons perhaps, but will release it to the police. Judging by the Constable I spoke to, I don't have high hopes. Which is too bad because all of the cops I know personally are great people.

Hi, it is very frustrating when things like this happen. Sorry for your lost bike.

May I ask exactly what kind of heavy chain did you use to protect your bike? (thickness, brand) Was it (bolt)cut or sawed off?

I'm asking because I want to know if my attempt-of-a-chain is just a futile effort to "protect" mine.

Damn, sorry to hear about your theft. Instead of abstaining from biking, how about an older bike, or a bike that looks bad but works well? We've discussed this at length and there's just not a good solution to condo thefts. Maybe you can talk to your condo association? You cannot prevent theft completely, especially in a public place like a condo. Cameras take photos, not prevent the actual theft.

Sorry to hear. Just curious what location you're at?

i know it may not be the best solution, and may not even be permitted by the condo...but what are the chances that you can put a shed in your parkingspot with locking doors?
still, if someone wants it they are going to just chop the lock off the door, but it kinda hides the bike at least.

Chain: grade 80 6800 pounds, I believe 8mm in diameter metal. Industrial stuff. With an ABUS chain sleeve around it (mostly to protect my wheels from damage). Since the column I attached it to is huge, I couldn't just buy the branded chains unless I managed to link 4-5 of them together (and spend $600 or something just on chains).

I think a bolt cutter was used, not a saw or angle grinder. A saw would have taken a long time. A bolt cutter even should have taken a decent amount of time with a lot of leverage though I'm not an expert.
[OOPS: After actually taking a decent look at the cuts, it was definitely an angle grinder]

I'm hoping that if nothing else, how my bike was situated and secured and where all the cameras are located means that we'll get some very good looks at the perps. I'd trade three or four bikes to get video footage of the thieves faces on CP24, to be honest.

But all the same, my final conclusion is that a theft-targeted bike (let's say ~ 2009+ SS or better) just can't make it through a season in a Toronto condo unless you've got a really extreme set up. i.e. the shed ideas, etc. Which honestly would be brutal since my garage and most others have annual or semi-annual scheduled cleanings and you'd have to move the shed/parked van/giant motorcycle safe/whatever to avoid being charged a fee for the cleaning, and then you'd have to buy another spot just for your car so you'd end up at least temporarily out of ~$25000 even if your condo board was cool with it all.

And my bike WAS located at some of the condos near Leslie and 401.

Don't steal my future business plan ?.
In another thread we're talking about shipping containers retrofitted with manual roll up doors.
I foresee a battle with condo boards.

I would imagine you would have a good case with Condo boards for being able to have a bike shed as it is their failing in my opinion. There is no way a dogey old caravan should be allowed to leave a condo lot without a flashlight check in the back for a bike. It is just too common of a occurrence.

I know it is a bit complicated but what about renting a storage unit.
Get few guys together from the same or different condo and all of u can put the bike there.
Safer then the underground.

Pic of the cut link in the chain. Seems pretty clearly the work of an angle grinder to me which, to my understanding, would get through anything. So my conclusion still holds: desirable bike in a condo is going to be stolen. Not much going to stop an angle grinder. These guys were apparently willing to make basically 3 full cuts through the thing, making a ton of noise and sparks (I think) to get to my bike.

TTC token added for scale and pity (guess how I'll be getting to work now?):
