Years of messages and threads gone. GTAM history wiped out. Who cares?

It's a private site Vlad, are you so dense you cant understand that? It's not yours, not mine, not anyone's but Paul's. If he decides to flick the switch and empty the database daily cause he feels like it he can. it's HIS. Just like facebook owns everything that's on it, even if it's personal information about people. You sign up you agree.

Just to play the devils advocate here.... using your Facebook analogy.
Facebook offers bunch of games on their page. Free yes. You pay for Facebook coins to play those games to level up or whatnot.
Then Facebook removes those games you paid Facebook coins for.
You'd be cheesed right? Sure its their site and its free, but users did contribute time and money.

-- note --
not griping.
glad that Paul apologized and is rectifying the situation.
Good on Paul for that.

No worries lol

I guess it all comes down to the terms when you go on right. When I donated money here, I did so to access the section of the forum that was reserved for site supporters.

Dont get me wrong here, I'm not validating or saying it was a good idea to delete the threads and posts, hell I took a huge dent in street cred here too you know lol

Just archive them and we'll still have access to it. My stance on it is in the end, whether we like it or not it's still a private site and they can change it to GTA Moped tomorrow if they want.

Blasting Paul wont bring the old threads back, asking if there's a solution or way to access the older archived threads is the way to go here, if they decide to give it up great, if they say no well, it is what it is.

Well said.

So the best solution is to create another database as an archive. I'll restore all the old posts to that database so they are accessible and searchable....but you won't be able to respond to them.

This sounds good to me. Hopefully the extra DB doesn't tax the system. On a side note that might be related, this week I've noticed several "Database error" messages when trying to access the forum. Is there some deeper problem with the DB that's being elusive?

Plus...it's a long weekend... :)

Happy Canada Day folks!! Have a great weekend!

You mean you're not going to work on this all weekend?? Shame on you Paul... ;) Have a good one!

I guess it all comes down to the terms when you go on right.
The terms we agree to when we join this community are terms of behavior. We agree to act as good members of a community and observe behavioral norms that maintains order. We do not agree to any terms of service delivery. Yet we all have expectations of service delivery, especially those who invest a lot of their self in the delivery of content -- ride reports, advice, reviews, etc.

I believe service delivery is a topic worth discussing and I started another thread that will hopefully arrive at an agreement regarding a sustainable service delivery level for a site that has grown quite large and quite valuable.

BTW, good on Paul to offer an archive DB for the missing data. Good solution that will balance availability with performance.

With only anecdotal evidence to back up what I am about to say, I'd bet that most of what was erased has been repeated since. We ***** and moan about **** not another what bike, what oil, do you wave thread. Now we just don't have proof of these threads. We can happily respond as if it were the first one.

There may not be evidence that carrots do clog toilets but I'd bet most topics important to operating a motorcycle have been repeated.

Hell does everyone here live in the past with a quest for a high post count. Move forward, (good thing most of your bikes don't have reverse).

I can tell you for a fact that carrots do clog toilets. Should I just start a new thread on the topic?

Did Icepic Mcdade finally manage to hack GTAM?

Sweet, that means that we still have Boston Pizza thread. Hey, what about that intro thread from supitschels? Anyone remember that one??

Although I don't agree with Vlad's choice of words, and I'm not going to lose any sleep over lost posts, I get what he's saying.

Sure, this is private property. Paul has done, and continues to do, a great thing by having started and maintaining this board. It's thankless work, but he's made the local motorcycling community better.

And there are people who recognize the value that this brings, and who want to go out of their way to contribute. Others are just post whores, and I've been on both sides of the fence - what can I say, I can't resist an opportunity to slag Saussage aka Axle Sticks.

But when folks do contribute, they're making a choice to contribute HERE. And so they feel a sense of ownership, because their work has made this place better. Without the contributions, this place is just an empty shell - an unused building full of squatters whose posts are of little lasting value, if not a source of temporary amusement.

This is place is good because of Paul - without SOMEONE having started it, there'd be nothing. But it was made better - continuously and constantly - by sweat equity. Contributions from others. CONTENT.

It's that sweat equity that was deleted. And so if folks, like Vlad, have their panties in a bunch because if it - well, it's because they bloody well care - and the fact that this site has people that care makes it good.

It's those people that care that are going to rebuild their sweat equity in this site over time. So when the "this is private property" argument comes out, it rings pretty bloody well hollow.

I get that, and that people miss all of the old messages (I hope that they'll be recoverable), but the 'this is private property' statement is the natural response to the 'this is all mine' type statements. It's hard to have a meeting of the minds, when people start from such an extreme position.

Agreed.

First beer's on me.

And yet Paul hasn't sold out to one of those internet strip miners, like Verticalscope. Trust me; you don't want that to happen.

LOL we've heard from them acually. I also laughed at them.

Ok...now that Vlad has resorted to name calling - he's been banned. Sorry folks...I really don't need him badgering me calling me names in other threads as well as this one.

Anyway....back to an update. And thanks doozerdave....I'm going to implement your suggestion. The posts that were removed had no responses to them in over a year. Little did I know that putting them back into the database would be so difficult - (I figured - take info out of a table - put info back into a table, apparently that's not the case.)

I could do a full back up from June 5, but then we'll have lost everything from June 5 to now.

Because the deleted posts are inactive - I don't think that's a solution. I also agree with others that information gets updated as it gets repeated.

So the best solution is to create another database as an archive. I'll restore all the old posts to that database so they are accessible and searchable....but you won't be able to respond to them.

This might take some time as I install - test - back up - install - test etc etc....

Another long weekend spent in the basement. LOL let me know if you need any help with the testing.
