Years of messages and threads gone. GTAM history wiped out. Who cares?

quit whining you noobs

if you dont like it, go play elsewhere

( or make your own new, epic thread ) ;)

Are you sarcastic or really that shallow, immature and ignorant?

- You are not "whining" because you haven't lost anything. If all your posts are as above they are completely useless.
- A post whore with less than a year on the board calling other people "noobs"?
- If you don't like it, go troll elsewhere.
- My "epic" threads are gone. Why would I make new ones if they will be deliberately erased in a few years?

I think he mented as a joke, because he has 700 and some and others in here only have about 200

The funny thing about this is that old members that used to post a lot got shafted while new members that started with their post diahrrea a year ago are up in the 3000 post count

I guess Vlads point is not about post count, but about the archived value posts that got lost

my 2 cents

Don't really care either way

we know he was joking.

sooo... "Mr. Over 2000 posts" what was that you were saying about post diarrhea? lol

First...let me say...sorry for the posts being deleted. I will do my best to restore them...but I make no promises and it may take me a while depending on my time.

Second - Vlad...this is not your personal server for you to store your information on. If you have a blog you would like to keep - I suggest you get your own server for that.

Cheers

Paul

Paul - appreciate the update and effort to get the posts back. I think many of us were just looking for more information and an update as to what was going on.

I know this is no one's personal blog - but it felt like it just came out of nowhere, and suddenly us oldtimers had our contributions almost decimated. If we had some warning than members like Vlad could've archived his posts and threads.

I think we'd all be appreciative if we could get it back.

lol you and I are members for about the same time, if you have less posts now all it means is that your post Diarrhea was all done early on, while mine has been consistent throughout time ;)

ahahaha... I will try to be more consistent from now on! :P

But you also have to keep in mind that i took a break from here for about two years so technically I'm not quite the post whore you are! :D

I guess this is the best we can expect. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help.

I never said this is my personal server and I fully acknowledged your right to do with this board whatever you please, so please don't put words in my mouth.

Even though this board is not owned by it's members it belongs to them as it would not exist without their participation and contribution. We do not store our information here - we share it with others.

GTAM is (or rather was) much more than your private system - it's a community. The way you treat your members and their contributions affects not just this board but the community that built it and supported it. You have an implied responsibility to your members whether you like it or not. Your recent behavior can only alienate those that care about this board and contribute high quality content to it.

If you have a blog you would like to keep - I suggest you get your own server for that.

I have a 150GB of storage with unlimited bandwidth and I know how to keep my data safe, thank you very much. I am also sharing some of it with GTAM community (ask anyone who has a Curtis GPS, for example). If you only bothered to ask, you would have received whatever help I can provide. I'm sure there are plenty of other IT professionals on this board who would be happy to offer their knowledge and resources. That's what community is all about.

Vlad, as an IT professional surely you realize that there are events that even the best prepared system can't avoid? Even banks occasionally lose information.

While I'm a little disappointed that the vast majority of my posts (6000+) have disappeared, I think we should all remember that Paul isn't paid to administer this site. It is his site, and he can do with it what he pleases. Based on the negative messages being posted, it sounds like a thankless position and I'm glad that Paul is taking care of it instead of me.

It would be nice if vBulletin had a ranking system where people could vote on a thread and then all threads over X years old with a rating of less than 3/5 could be automatically deleted. This would help keep the database clear of the verbal diarrhea threads out there, while maintaining some of the old (but useful) threads.

As for the credibility -- there are members with low post counts who write much better posts than members with high post counts. I have seen other forums where people can "thank" other members for specific posts, and I find this to be a much more accurate representation of credibility (and allows me to gauge the quality of a post before I decide whether or not I want to read it). People with 100 posts and 100 thanks are much better contributors than people with 15,000 posts and 200 thanks. It would be awesome if GTAM has some sort of reputation mechanism in the future.

Wow..just...wow.. Some people just need to get over themselves..like, seriously.

Of course, been there many times myself. I never waited for my users to tell me what I just did affects them. I inform people that have put their trust in me about the incident, acknowledge my mistake, explain the consequences and outline actions I am planning to take to restore what was lost and prevent similar problems from happening again. Then I keep all interested parties informed (and involved if necessary) on my progress until resolution.

It took days, at least three threads and dozens of messages from confused members for Paul to even tell us something happened.

He isn't forced to do it either. He is just a member of this community. The one with most power and consequently most responsibility - both of which he took on voluntarily. If it's too much of a burden roles and responsibilities can be divided and delegated. The moderator system seems to be working reasonably well after all - why not apply the same principle to database/server administration? Again, I can't find any excuses.

Don't forget that there are plenty of site supporters who regularly donate money to help keep this board running.

I'm pretty sure vBulletin has tools for that and the idea sounds pretty good. I'm not sure I would trust it to be fully automated though. Also, before considering similar actions we need to know the parameters we are working with. Maybe the database size isn't the major factor at all.

As for the credibility -- there are members with low post counts who write much better posts than members with high post counts.

The immensity of the **** I don't give about post counts cannot be measured. We had a reputation button for a while but it was removed for reasons I'm not privy of.

Are all my posts in Trash Talk ok? They're like my illegitimate children I never visit.

...there's forums OUTSIDE of Trash Talk and Romper Room???

Different duty to report. Different amount of time possible to make corrections.
