Wrecked my FZ1 in the Catskills, what to do now...

Well, there you have it. I bought the sweet 2005 FZ1 from ResidentEvil, that was listed here a month ago, and crashed it on the 21st down in NY State...about 660 kms from home. Panic stop to avoid the rider in front of me - low speeds but I locked the rear up and lost control, I was on the ground before I had time to think about it. The good news is I walked away with a bad shoulder and some scrapes and bruises. My gear did its' job.

Bad news is that my bike is at a garage down there, and seems to be more damaged than I thought. Frame sliders worked well. It needs some plastics, obviously...I rode it slowly about 2 miles to the garage the following day, the wheel and bar weren't aligned, but the forks appeared to be straight. The mechanic is telling me there's a small dent in the frame near the steering head, the kind of thing that warrants a writeoff, according to what he sees there typically. (I'll post a pic of that when he sends it)

Gonna try to figure out what it'll cost to put it right (I passed on collision coverage). One of my options might be to sell it as a salvage bike to someone down there, has anyone here ever done that?

Yikes! Thats not good!....... Glad to here you are OK though. :) Pains me to see her in that state :(

I have a buddy with some old fz parts (same model and colour) if you are interested. He has the front fairing and a few other parts.

Looks like the frame sliders did thier job though...

Thanks Jon, I'll let you know. Yeah, it's f*cked up. I low-sided but the bike ended up on it's right, as though it high-sided. All a blur and I did have a mild concussion. But if that's what happened (bike flipped) it might explain why the top of the frame got dinged worse than the frame slider (?).

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention. The steering lock is gone on the right side.

That sounds pretty bad to dislodge the steering lock. Please tell me you followed up with a doctor on the head injury.

Yeah for sure - I went to the local ER immediately and had x-rays and cat scans, they came back ok. Saw my doc last Monday as well, and I'm starting physio tomorrow. So far Intact is supporting me ok, they'll cover the medical bills and said they'd pay for new gear as well as my bus ticket home...

If you are parting it out i would be interested in the windshield/screen.

I'm the guy talking to you on the FZ1OA about the fender and signal. If you do decide to part the bike I may be interested in the motor, pending mileage. Don't know if you like naked bikes but these are very easy to make naked with a sv650 headlight. I think I even have a spare laser cut bracket to mount the instrument cluster. That's another option to consider.

Thanks, ok - how about we put that on hold for a few days until I find out what's what. Interested in that bracket....again depending if my frame is still usable.

No problem at all. Here is my bike naked for an idea.

Never crashed, I just perfer the look. I abosolutely love these bikes too, that's why I am looking for a spare black motor as I plan on keeping her a while. Although I am kinda itching for a Gen II lately.

Here is what looks to be a smoking deal...

I miss my FZ. Sad day when I sold it for the same money that an SV650 was selling for. A very under-appreciated bike.

I sold mine, then saw it listed for sale on Kijiji 9 months later......I ended up buying it back :)

To avoid the bike in front of him, it's in the first post lol

...the front brakes will easily lift the back end off the ground on that bike.

Not asking why he had to brake, but why locking the rear was even an optiin

Panic stop, wasn't using my head. Apparently ten yrs of riding haven't cured my reflex to brake with my foot. (32 yrs driving cars)

Not everyone has years of riding experience would be my guess. Know he knows and has gained some experience ;).
