would you take a picture if you saw someone sketchy staring at your bike?

as a Private Investigator here's my .02 Absolutely you did the right thing and you are within your legal rights to do so. As others have written, as long as the person is not someplace where they would have a reasonable expectation of privacy then you are free to take a picture. Actually, if a person is in there own home but have the curtains wide open its a bit of a grey area legally as some can argue that a person with curtains wide open cannot possible expect what's going on within the house to be considered "private". You also did the right thing by answering "yes" when he asked if you took his picture. Now that he knows you have a picture, its certainly a deterrent for him returning and keying your vehicle or something. To the poster who said no one steals a 250: bullcrap, scumbag thieves will steal anything! And it sounds like you never allowed yourself to get too close to him and could easily have gone back inside if he approached. kudos to you

well when he confronted me he stayed on the sidewalk... when he threatened to take my pic I pointed out he was about to step on our property (2) what would be his justification... I did walk close enough because I couldnt hear him from where I was at...but I made sure to stay at least on my property with him on the sidewalk...

You might find this link helpful, when it comes to photographers' rights.

No offence, but the way your post reads some dude was walking by your house and stopped to look at you're bike, at which point you assumed he was bad news, started taking pictures of him, and accused him of potential wrong doing because he "looked like he had no business on the sidewalk". All perceived "threat" is totally unsubstantiated beyond a hunch. In fact you use the word "threatened to take my picture", when all it seems he was doing was trying to reason with you about why you were taking his. I agree its good to follow your hunches, and that you didnt do anything wrong. However, I can easilly put myself in this guys position of walking about with his headphones on, and stopping to check out your bike. Then you emerge with your camera taking pictures of him and acting as if he is dangerous. I dont think its that strange that he confronted you about it - or even that he played the race card. Legally entitled or not, I would have a "WTF" attititude as well.

If he is was on the sidewalk (public property) then it is not illegal to take a picture.

And editing my quote just because it doesnt fawn unconditional praise on you for being reactionary and paranoid is pretty lame. You asked for opinions not a rally in your favor.

I actually meant to edit out the "kudos part" because I know it was a criticism. I didnt edit to make it seem you were siding with me... if you notice I deleted everything after the sentence I addressed. I just deleted it to make it shorter but didnt realize I didnt delete enough. My response was specifically to the sentence predicating it. Thank you for pointing it out I have corrected it. I realize the post was a bit of a rant...I thought by me indicating guy was pacing back and forth multiple times between my house and my neigbours only..during me backin up my car, warming up the bike, being inside the house, stepping back out of the house again inferred time was more than a dude walking by and stopping...

the "threatening to take my picture" wording...I dont know how else I could have phrased to reflect the sentiment I was receiving. at this point this man was yelling at me and was not listening to rationale...even when I told him I would be ok and would wait if he wanted to call the cops if he thought I did anything illegal on my property.

regardless I appreciate your sentiment of how the world has turned though I may not agree with it. I realize I asked for the opinion and you gave it. thanks

Picture or video on your property, it's okay. Same thing goes with security cameras. As long as you don't post them, or do anything with them.

Not true at all. You can use any photo you like for personal use, including display and reproduction. It's commercial use of such photography that would be deemed illegal.

Actually, I looked a bit closer and it seemed that you quoted Socially Distorted but used my name. Copy and Paste Error I presume. So I deleted my mention of it and I apologize for my tone in that line and for giving you this guy ->

Cheers :)

Should have pulled out your nine, and busta cap in his heed yo :)

I thought my post was pretty clear that I supported everything the OP did. "kudos to you" wasnt anything negative : I always have thought giving "kudos" to someone was the same a congratulating them. If I'm wrong, I apologize...and now i'm going to find an internet dictionary!

so are you going to post the pictures or what?

Yeah, post up the pictures so we can further analyze how exactly the guy was looking at your bike.

youre right...he thought I used your quote as his to basically support me. He thought I paraphrased what HE said when he was the opposite thought...then realized I didnt and I was (1) thanking you or (2) didnt try and infer he was siding with me. he was nice enough to edit the criticism out?

Yeah, post up the pictures so we can further analyze how exactly the guy was looking at your bike.
I would except I am too lazy to try and photoshop/ blur his face... I only took the pic as a defensive method to ensure my bike wasnt gonna be messed with. its still fine so I dont feel right posting a pic of a guy who although ridiculously rude and insane is not guilty of anything?
I didnt take a pic of him staring at my bike since I was inside when he did it... as soon as I popped my door open he walked away but stayed within my property areas, paced back, and thats when I took the shot. I wanted him to be aware I took his pic as a precaution and that wouldnt have worked from inside the house?
