** This is not a solicitation for a real business. This post is strictly for a school assignment I'm doing about a new business start-up. Real-world(TM) considerations are not being taken into account such as the prohibitive cost of insurance or legal liability -- I know how risky this would be in real life.

I'd like to ask this question only to gauge your interest in the service. Please give me your honest opinions.



Would you or someone you know consider renting a motorcycle, ATV, or snowmobile to ride around on the roads and trails surrounding the Barrie area?

Would you be interested in day trips that include tours of scenic regional roads? Trips would include stopping for a delicious lunch at local eateries.

Minimum G2 requirement for renting on-road motorcycles.

Snowmobile insurance, licensing and trail passes would be provided.


Cost TBD but would probably be around $200 for the day without a tour and $250 for a tour including lunch.

For $200 just to ride around the area? No. I can rent a vehicle myself and ride around in the same area for cheaper.


I would pay to have a tour around good roads and have a full day worth of riding but for $250? No.
 
I probably shouldn't have put up any pricing. That was a bit premature.

What if it was $100?

I imagine most people here wouldn't be interested in renting since a lot have their own equipment.

But maybe for someone who rides a 125 and wants to try a 250, or for someone who has their M2 but wants to "try before they buy", it might be a good value.

I dunno.. just thinkin out loud here
 
Try looking at what these guys do. I've used them twice in the last couple of years.
One thing for sure renting a bike is really expensive. For $100 I would consider a bike for all day, but definitely not if it was a 125 hell no.

In Vancouver I payed almost $500 to rent a Yamaha FJR1300 for 3 days. It was expensive but totally worth it !
 
is there anywhere in the GTA that will let me (and perhaps a few friends) rent an atv for a day and take them out on some trails?
 
I think you would have trouble in a long run, These kind of businesses tend to only thrive in places with lots of tourist traffic, because the repeat customer aspect is a bit low, after all a guy isn't gonna want to rent a snowmobile to travel the same place over and over.

I actually think you could establish a decent repeat customer base with the sleds. It's sort of a niche market so the people that are willing to rent will go to where the good trails are.

I have been a few times up in the Parry Sound area and it was a lot of fun. When I went I was on a borrowed sled. If I didn't actually live in a place like that I would have a very hard time justifying buying a sled.

Right now I live in London so if i wanted to have a sled i'd need somewhere to keep it, a trailer for it, insurance, trail passes, maintenance, the actual expense of buying it, etc. Now considering that I have to drive a minimum of 4 hours to actually use it somewhere fun, I really doubt I would be able to use it all that often. Now let's say a friend and I could each rent one for a weekend.. Just throw our gear in the car and drive up. That's it!

Here's a place in Haliburton that does it. http://www.skidoorentals.com/rent.html $200 for a weekday. Not bad. I'd be willing to bet they do good business.
 
There are a few businesses doing Snow sled and atv rentals around the province. Its a viable business model when your in the right location, check the pricing at Deerhurst, its not cheap.
There are lots of people that will tell you it should be cheap, if you price the cost of ownership of a good sled and have about three weekends with the gang to go away, rentals become very reasonable.

Thats how i feel exactly. $200 for a weekday seems like a bargain to me.
 
I can see how ATV and snowmobile rentals could prove to be an effective business. My concern with on-road motorcycle rentals is that most riders who would have to already posses at least an M2 license would be far too interested in the sport to simply rent. Unless, as mentioned above, you can locate yourself in a high tourist traffic area to attract foreign riders.

This thread brings back memories of sledding in my early teens. I saved up and bought my own snowmobile, and went EVERYWHERE on that thing. Luckily I lived in a rural area and didn't need a trailer to go out for a rip. Fuel and insurance was much cheaper back then, and the snow was MUCH more plentiful. I could never afford all this if I were an early teen today :(

I would consider renting a sled for old-times sake. Ontario scenery on the OFSC trails is pretty amazing, and the fellow OFSC trail riders are generally VERY nice people :)
 
I go to Quebec every year in early Feb. every year and we rent sleds for 5 days. The price of the sled rental and accomodation plus food for the week is about equal to a week down south same time of the year. The trails are amazing and we have a great time sledding for a week putting on over 1,000 kims of riding well groomed trails. That's the only sledding I do all year and it's well worth it. New sleds, insurance & trail permits included; sleds delivered & picked up to where we stay - can't beat it!
 
here's a hint. Make the business very close to the airport. But still in a trendy area.
Like North of the Airport near Derry Rd or a bit north of that.
And a biker friendly cafe would also help business.
 
I've been renting a cruiser from GTA Exotics for the last 6 years, trying out different bikes everytime. Worth the rental for someone who doesn't exactly know what they want just yet
