With all of the recent deaths...

anyone else note that the driver was a 76 year old woman in that Focus?

They should slap that on the top of the m1 written test in big bold writing!
This thread reminds of the sign at a skydive dz years ago that was put up on the walk to the waiting aircraft.

Skydiving is a potentially fatal sport.
If you can't accept this, please leave.

Very well said Horizon, except the bit about the CBR125; my current bike ;)

Unfortunately, from what I've read on this forum, there are quite a few riders who seem to believe they are immortal. Whethers it's a certain lack of maturity, testosterone or simply "peer pressure", or even arrogance, these riders (IMHO), make it bad for other riders.

btw rodrigo lost a friend and you guys are gonna sit here and make fun of him?? nice, you guys somehow like to think you're part of a "community" but not a single one of you acts like it...

It's up to Rodrigo and others like him to seek out and heed the advice of others. No one is going to sit there and baby him while he rides. If he has only a few months of experience, I personally feel that a relatively new R6 was a bad choice. If I knew him personally, I would tell him that, and offer any help that I could despite his poor (in my mind) decision. I wouldn't make fun of him. But the choices that he's seemingly made are his, and his alone. And if he feels that riding a motorcycle means his life is no longer in his hands, then he should try to fix that or reconsider the sport. Or risk becoming another statistic and joining his friend.

Let's face it: Many of these riders who pass will not be remembered by us. The only people who will care about their death is their friends and family. The rest of us will just remember them by the statistic. It's a sad fate, and it's not exactly the way I would like to go. My fear isn't death. My fear is death not coming on my terms.

Fair enough, but we have to realize that everyone may only have the driving skills of a 76 year old woman. This isn't the track where you can bank on a certain skill level of your fellow riders, such that you don't really have to worry TOO much about someone hitting you (save for some bonehead passes that can happen). This is the road, where drivers can drive from point A to point B in a sheltered box that lets them listen to music and operate electronics that distract them from riding, all by simply passing a 20 question written test, and 2 road tests. Driver training is simply not on par with motorcycle rider training. And even the basic motorcycle rider training is not enough in my opinion. If it were, then we wouldn't have these preventable deaths.

If you're riding on the street, you need to be prepared for the unexpected. That doesn't mean you ride the whole time super tense. If I'm on the 401 crusing along at 120 km/h, I'm checking my mirrors every so often, but otherwise, I'm daydreaming and thinking about other things. But as soon as I hit traffic or the surface streets, that changes. Your attention level and alertness needs to correspond to the given situation. Otherwise, that old woman will get you.

LOL, I love the CBR125, I wasn't trying to slight it. Just making the point that just because it's not a 100+HP SS, doesn't mean that you can't die on it.

The immortal feeling you're getting from some is likely just an ego thing. Sooner or later, those people get a reality check.

That said, I don't think it's limited to the inexperienced riders. Many experienced riders also carry the same attitude. Whether that comes with experience or confidence, I don't know. Heck, look at me, I have just over a year of riding experience, and I'm spouting off trying to tell others how it is. I'm sure I exude the same type of arrogance you're describing. But I guess there's a difference between those who can back it up, and those who can't.

Exactly how are we supposed to act? If you're acting like an idiot, I'm going to call you an idiot. That's my due diligence as a fellow human being in this community called Earth.

Ha, I dig the interview with the 1-month newb with the vest on the black R6. "It's really hard to slow down, in second gear I'm already at 50 or 60 and a car is only doing 30." Typical.

For once I actually agree with you +1

ohh mann, i just found out that it was my friend from way back that died with the Alberta plates in that vid segment.... fuuuuuuuuuuckkkkkkkkk

LOL. Just because someone owns 2 wheels, it doesn't mean they can't say stupid things or get called on it. Last time I checked this hobby was entirely voluntary, and if you can't handle the risks associated with it, you are fully free to sell the bike and pack it in. Or maybe he should trade in the R6 and learn on something smaller.

R.I.P. My condolences.

I just watched the interview and all I can say is WOW!
Insurance will probably take a hike soon but all the new riders out there better be prepared for it along with the rest of us.

This could be the video the insurance uses to justify the hike.

Boys and girls, this is what NOT to do!

Best ways to practice:

Play dodge the pot holes (as chicken as you can get).
Play chicken with red light, stop OUT of your comfort zone and closer to e-stopping each time. <--- careful
