First off cars are generally better than bikes on the brakes. Look up some stats, you may be surprised that most boring 4-door sedans can out-brake a modern sport bike. Some bikes would be somewhat ok to ride in the winter, others are very ill suited to winter riding.

Secondly, if you genuinely wanted to save money you'd be driving a boring little car like a 1995 Civic Hatchback and you wouldn't be riding at all. Bikes are higher maintenance than cars and a lot of bikes cost more to insure than cars. The argument that a bike is cheaper than a little puddle-jumper car like that is specious at best.

First off

To insure a car costs 2 to 5 times more. Fuel consumptions of a car is to 2 to 4 times as much. No emissions and plates are almost half for a bike. Cost of buying a car is 2 to 4 times more than a bike. Bikes saves money over a car.

Second - My cbr125 will outbrake any car. I have put that to the test many times. I can't say for other bikes but laws of physics apply. 2 less wheels and 1/4 to a fraction of the weight of a car.

I just did a quick search on the goldwing, The cadillac of motorcycles? gets 40 to 45 mpg. Most econo boxs will brag about that kind of fuel economy. Get any SS bike and you are still getting the fuel economy econo boxs brag about. I started this thread referencing the movie and saying the right bike. My cbr is not not the right bike for riding in freezing rain and snowing conditions.

This is VERY incorrect.

I'd gladly put this to the test with ANY car you'd like to select.

What happens when you have to brake while turning in wet, icy, or snowy conditions.

He cites fewer wheels as an ADVANTAGE for braking. Damn.
 
I've said it several times in the past.

This site attracts the most superheros and gifted individuals who are apparently not bound by the laws of physics and possess riding skills that are superior to all electronic aids.

not all bikes are equal, nor are cars. You have to ride or drive according to the feel of your bike/car.

Oh yes. Can you feel your bike going under the back of the car in front of you when you find the bike on its side while trying to brake on ice and snow? Can you feel your efforts to undermine the car in front being augmented by the car behind you sliding in for an assist?
 
So then you'd like to participate in a test to prove you're right?

so tell me what car you can out-brake with your CBR and I'll prove you wrong on Dry pavement, wet pavement and icy pavement.

to prove the result is not due to my experience, we can switch and I'll ride the bike.

I've been racing for 30 years and I would not be able to outbrake ANY modern car in wet or icy conditions with any street tire available on the market.
 
We had this same 'winter riding' discussion a couple weeks ago when i posted about still riding even now with no snow on the ground. I will ride on days when there isn't any snow or ice on the ground, but if there is even a hint of it, forget it. See how much this guy enjoys it, nice sunny day and just a bit of black ice..

PS. to ItIsWhatItIs, do you own or drive a car? just curious as to why you are so pro bike about the braking thing. It's not even close, cars brake quicker and more solidly. Click here to Google the subject matter and see how many times the braking comparison has been discussed, it's been talked about on every motorcycle forum there is, and many tests have been done by professionals and the consensus is fact that bikes cannot stop as quickly as cars. And like others mentioned 2 wheels have no chance on cornering on ice let alone stopping on it.

Cagers know how I ride my bike. Sometimes a few will purposely hit their brakes for no reason. All that does is make me watch their actions more closely until I get that opportunity to pass them. I know I can outbrake them, I have proven it to myself many times. Would I ride like that on snow/ice covered roads, no.

I have to wonder about the videos being reference and the roads they made those videos on. For the most part you will be riding on roads that have been salted and continuosly plowed and then salted. You have to have the right bike. What are the right bikes?

The kawasaki KLXSF 250 - 70 mpg (A carb bike, more when it becomes FI)
 
There are a few riders on this board that ride all year round , i personally take my helmet off to them. I don't think there needs to be a huge thread or argument to this. Maybe the compromise is getting a 3 wheeler like the can-am or something.

I love when I can rely on my personal experience and not opinions in left field. If you are concerned about your braking, don't tailgate, drive slower, and don't speed up when someone goes to pass. That's just being rude.

yea I know, I guess less points of contact and friction against the ground = better breaking in his mind
