Wills

........ but without me and my sister reviewing it to flag for any errors.
When I drove my mother to her lawyer to have her will done he specifically stated that I was not allowed in the room with them. His reasoning was to ensure she was 'of sound mind and body' without prodding from anyone else.

I was POA and Executor and grandkids got the rest. I was proud of her.

That’s the best way. Neither of us were with parents and lawyer or interfered with their process.

I just read the will to check for errors (found one), and not change anything else.

A little surprised both my parents want to be cremated and not buried. That’s was a bit surprising and sad. But they both said ‘why the hell would you waste so much money on putting us in the ground? We won’t care by then.’

My mom had stated she wanted to be cremated for years (she had a bug thing) so it wasnt a surprise. When she hit her 90s she added a codicil that there was to be no funeral and wanted her ashes buried with my sister. She said anyone she would have wanted at her funeral were already dead so no need to waste the money on one. Almost 5K for cremation and another 1K for burial.

btw, the 'temporary urn' that a crematorium offers (while you decide if you want to buy one of theirs or your own or nothing) turns out to be a bag inside a cardboard box. I was expecting at least pressed cardboard in an urn shape. Nope. If I believed in ghosts I know she would have haunted me for that so I made my own urn for burial (just in case).

Edit: Not sure about all cemeteries but the one she wanted strictly prohibited scattering of ashes. They also required a 'cremation certificate' which matches the sticker on the 'urn'

The more that is in your (and your siblings' name) the less probate to it. As your mother is the primary residence, she can add you to the title, and no capital gains or any probate as you're now part owner.
But if she has any other account in her name that has to go probate, thats an issue, as the value of any other asset jointly owned buy her and seen to be a trust, will be added to the probate. So the $ value is added. Your government cracking down.

My mother found out she had cancer and no way out so similarly opted for cremation. She didn't want a bunch of people gawking. When the smoke had cleared the facility gave me a gift shopping bag with a cardboard box in it. The remains were in a plastic bag inside the box. I made a wooden box to make it look a little better.

Technically the cemetery doesn't want wood but it's not like it would cause a grave collapse.

It was kind of creepy, driving around with a box of my mom in the van.

I've opted for cremation and have always wanted to be shot out of a cannon. Hmmm

You spoke of driving around with your Mom's ashes in your van and how creepy it seemed.

I once had to take my sister's ashes down to New Brunswick for burial in the family plot there. Didn't know what to expect going through security at Pearson with her ashes (in an urn) in my carry-on. I was told I couldn't pack her in my checked luggage well before I went to the airport. Was also told to let security know I was carrying human remains as I went through the scanner.

As I put my carry-on bag in the grey tub they provide, I mentioned my bag contained human remains. Well; you'd have thought I had just announced there was a bomb in my carry-on 😱 All hell broke loose as the screening officer grabbed the carry on out of the tub and set it aside while shouting some code out as loud as he could. Screening officers came running from everywhere. Two stood on either side of me & one behind me so I could go nowhere. Another was sent away to get a 'special human remains tub'. That took about 10 minutes while we all stood there, me looking like a criminal to others passing through security. The guy finally showed up with the 'human remains tub'. It looked exactly like the regular, grey tubs they give you lol.

Went through smoothly then and boarded the plane. Felt a little weird having my sister's ashes in the storage compartment above my head for a couple of hours.

20240613_203354.jpgSue didn't want any part of a wake or service of any kind. She asked me to scatter her ashes somewhere that the grandkids would remember.
So i bungeed her to the pillion of the Tenere and met the kids and grandkids at my daughter's cabin near Algonquin. We scattered her ashes in the river that feeds the lake.I told the kids that every time they swim, they swim with Mimi.
