Speed limits on B.C. highways are long overdue for a review and could see an increase based on current research, the province’s new transportation minister says.
It’s been more than a decade since the government last reviewed current speed limits, Todd Stone said Thursday.
“One of the things I think you have an obligation to do as a new minister is to take a look at everything your ministry is responsible for and challenge the status quo,” he said.

About 85 per cent of British Columbians routinely travel 10 kilometres above the speed limit, but it’s actually the drivers going the speed limit who are at risk – especially on highways, according to Stone.
“The person travelling 10 kilometres below is arguably of greater harm to him or herself and others travelling on that corridor,” he said.
Stone has instructed his staff to review the limits, as well as the policies behind setting speed limits, with a goal of producing a list of recommendations by next spring.
“What we would like to do is get out there, have a conversation with British Columbians and take a hard look at the data,” he said.
B.C. Premier Christy Clark supported the move, saying she’s received plenty of feedback that many of the province’s routes are too slow.
“I can tell you as a representative from the Okanagan there are a lot of people who say we don’t have the speed limits right,” she said at an event Wednesday. “I think it’s appropriate that we go and we make sure that the speed limits are right all across this province.”
Ian Tootill, co-founder of Sense B.C., an organization that advocates “sensible road safety laws and enforcement,” said an increase in speed limits wouldn’t automatically mean drivers would then go even faster on highways.
“It’s a fallacy that many people hold on to, that when you set a posted limit people will always exceed it. It doesn’t work like that. It’s been proven false time and time again,” he said.
Tootill said there is a safe travel speed that drivers naturally gravitate toward, and most B.C. highways are below that limit.
By raising the speed limit, law enforcement can then “focus on the people that are really exceeding the speed limit and causing the problems, and then I think we’ll all be happy,” he said.
“We have some of the best cars, the best roads, and people in British Columbia are no dumber than anywhere else, they can handle it.”]

This is actually easier to get done than ppl may think.
If ppl sent their MP and MPP's emails as well as Twitter and FB to clearly tell them this is one major thing that is directly impacting their life with stress and increased time on the roads where that time is better spent working or with family.
Tell them this is a voting issue for you and they will have to act or they don't get elected.

There is a Canadian joke in short it goes "oooh are you going to write a harshly worded letter".
Well we have better visibility today via FB and Twitter.
Elections are much much closer now, not one vote or one riding can be taken for granted.

Wrong. Studies conducted show that 120kph is a "natural" speed thst people gravitate to.

Why is it so different in the States?A trip on the interstates of Michigan,Pennsylvania or New York is normally right at the limit.Rarely do you get passed by speeders.

Agreed, when on the interstates I'm shocked as to how easy the flow is and it's a rare occurrence to see speeders. Mind you their enforcement is more anal also so that could be it. And the fact there are higher speed limits in some sections (75mph for instance).

I agree, my gas mileage really suck above 120km/hr....

That was def one thing that I noticed.

120km/h would ideal for 401. Doubt we'd get anything more than that.

x3 I just came back from a driving holiday around the Adirondacks in NY and the green mountains in Vermont. Incidence of speeders...practically zero. Nice easy traffic flow, very relaxing no stress driving. That was despite quite a few illogically slow 55mph sections of road.

Talked to a civvie doing his PhD in traffic analysis.. 120-130 for the 400-series.. He said we could even get away with 120 on 69 for example. Not gonna happen. Too logical, too much of an outcry can be raised by the monster-shouters and reduces ticket revenue.

Not only that, the very first accident/death that happens after any increase would have the lefties running an emotion based tirade about saving lives which would probably have them calling for lowering the limits below current ones....

^^^ so just explain to me then why the land of the free sees things a little differently with what seems to be totally different attitudes?

NB Route 2 has had a 110 limit on it's HWY for quite a while now and it's pretty good for people sticking to that speed and better yet, moving over when someone enters the passing lane behind them.

The cops enforce any speeding violation over 120 so you have two distinct speeds in the two lanes.

One for cruising ~ the limit and one for moving around a slightly slower vehicle.

Imagine.

Come on people. Are five minutes worth someone's life? What if someone with mental issues wonders on the 401? 20km/h will do a lot more damage.

This is a slippery slope. Just because "the majority of drivers drive 10 km/h over the limit" doesn't mean that increasing it by 10/km/h will make them drive at that new limit lol.

If people already ignore the limit and drive 20kph over then it won't actually make a difference . Your are implying that if the limit was 120 then people would drive 20 over that? Numerous studies have already concluded the "natural" speed that people are comfortable at which is around the 120 mark. There are already other provinces with higher limits and numerous states that have higher limits. Your logic doesn't follow.

Nope. We need better enforcement. With strict enforcement we will see the advantages of lower speed limits.
