The sad thing is Zelenskyy believed the USA would protect them when Russia invaded because USA administrations for decades prior to and leading up to that point were propping them up to join NATO. Even though it was well known it would provoke Russia to start something and the USA and others thought Russia would never do it.

The war ends with Ukraine giving up a lot to Russia and USA or the start of WW3. Can’t unring the bell now.

The USA is responsible for the whole thing from beginning to end. The us and Russia guaranteed Ukraine security in exchange for the nukes. They should have have kept the nukes. As American guarantees are meaningless.

I think NATO is finished. It needs to be replaced with a new EU based organisation that excludes the USA and fixes some of the rules that have hampered what it does. Canada needs to be part of this, along with the rest of the Commonwealth.

That's the fun part of coalitions. You don't need to include the aholes. They can stomp their feet but otherwise how do they "not allow" it? Invade canada so the whole coalition is against them? That seems short sighted (although I could see him doing it).

Would you trust jt with the launch codes? We're less likely to die from an external attack than a mishap with nukes stored in a leaky basement imo.

There was talk not long ago of kicking Canada out of five eyes after all the Chinese influence on govt officials.

Also Australia would probably side with the US over the UK. Australia needs the US for protection from China (something the UK and Commonwealth cannot provide) and the US needs Australia for its geographical location as it pivots its attention away from russia to its real peer-level rival China.

Stuff like this makes the headlines but, the reality is European leaders won’t engage Russia to negotiate an end to the war.

It’s easy to denounce Trump and criticize his VP and dust up at the oval but, someone has to talk to Russia as a path to making the war end.

Eventually the money and weapons escalate to troops from allies and Russia will respond accordingly. Ukraine lives with either a death of a thousand cuts with prolonged war or work out a deal to end it. At what cost to end the war? Ukraine will still have a flag to wave but, a lot less territory and a lot less mineral rights.

I’ve listened to pro US commentators that are critical of Europe state that Trump and Vance acted deplorably. “JD Vance is a piece of ****” was the most memorable comment.

For all Trump’s supporters that hate communism it’s going to be a bit of a head spinner to find out their orange overlord is a pretty big fan of it.

There IS NO negotiating with Russia. They will use any break in hostilities as an opportunity to re-arm themselves for the next phase.

Look up the Budapest Memorandum. This is the agreement for the UK and USA and Russia, among others, to provide security guarantees to Ukraine in exchange for Ukraine giving up nuclear weapons that were on its soil following the breakup of the USSR. Russia has been in violation of this since 2014 (invasion of Crimea and Donbas regions). At the moment, it is rather questionable whether the USA has been living up to their end of the bargain; depends whether you consider the slow-walk of weapons supply to be in compliance. And yes, I am criticising the Biden administration here.

Following the 2014 violation of the Budapest Memorandum by Russia came the Minsk agreements (ceasefire) - which failed to stop the fighting.

Russia has been up to no good in the region since 2008: Georgia, Chechnya.

All of the former regions of the USSR know that Russia is a schoolyard bully and only understands brute force. If you want to negotiate, you have to beat them up first.

Some of the responsibility for the current Ukraine situation lies with the West for NOT enforcing the 1991 boundaries (forcing Russia out of land that they had taken) after 2008, and then 2014-2015. Ukraine needs to finish beating up Russia. Only THEN can there be meaningful negotiation.
