Clearly there is a significantly larger percentage of smokers among the ghetto population compared to the population as a whole. Your thoughts? I even welcome real responses based on data and statistics as well as good replies

Boredom, I'd say.

Upbringing? More parents smoke so therefore more kids do?

Why do the parents smoke? Likely less education so they are not as aware as more affluent people of the detrimental health effects (this has been somewhat equalized by the images on cigarettes). My money is on this is a part of their life that they can control, it is not cheap, but not unaffordable on a daily basis (over time obviously the bill becomes enormous, but if people are used to living paycheque to paycheque and haven't seen any other way to live they are not likely to change). Basically it is their 2 minutes of escape from a life where they work their ***** off for next to no money just to try to stay even, getting ahead isn't an option, so you might as well enjoy life a little.

These are just suspicions and I may be totally wrong.

There's a hot chick at my company that smokes. I bet if I were to get close to her she would smell like a box o' cigarettes, ewww

More bikers smoke than the average population. Go to a bike meet, at least 2 smokers out of 5 bikers.

when i quit i used a video game with no save option to keep my hands busy, completed the game (can't remember what it was) and haven't smoked since.

Good idea actually, keeps your mind and hands off the craving.

Not sure if you're talking about weed or cigarettes?

Weed: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9290858
Cigarettes (& weed): http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11980549

The key is socioeconomic status. Lower socioeconomic status people have more compounding factors so they basically are more likely to start doing anything economically available. Extreme cigarette or weed usage is a good predictor of usage in adulthood & low SES just generally tend to have more exposure to it. Not to mention that it's also a stress-reliever/outlet for stress. For the super-poor, cigarettes also help to fill in as temporary snacks, so they can bide their time until their next meal.

Haven't been to Quebec yet, have you? That'll muck up your percentages right there.

If she smokes, I don't think that she is hot...could be the hottest girl in the world and if she smokes I think it's disgusting. I have lots of friends that smoke but don't think I could ever date one.

I'm on the bored train as well. Starts out with peer pressure and then continues out of boredness and doesn't stop because of addiction

I want to try smoking. I hear it's very hard to quit and I'm always up for a challenge.

I don't agree with this, at least not in my case. Both my parents smoke and I can tell you, there is nothing in the world that I find more nasty. I NEVER had any desire to smoke..brother is the same. As a matter of fact, we both look and shake our heads. A lot of people say the same thing to me that you stated and I tell them, I just don't think it's true. I imagine if you grow up with alcoholic parents it would tend to make you not want to be an alcoholic. I really don't know, but that's how it worked for me.

And I don't think it's a ghetto thing..I think it's more a cultural and mental thing.

Agreed. Both my parents smoked for years .. and now all 3 of us cant stand the smell of it.

More than likely, ill probably get lung cancer due to the amount of second hand smoke we inhaled while growing up.
