Why Android is better than iPhone.

Re: Jelly Bean is here

Finally had a chance to check out the iPad mini today.

It makes much more sense than the bigger iPad that was beside it. Very thin and light, impressive.

The major disappointment was the display. I can't believe more reviewers dont view this as a huge downfall.

To my eyes, within seconds of looking at the display, it seemed like less detail than the Playbook I currently use. Sure enough, after a spec check, the ipad mini has 163ppi. The PB has 170ppi. Doesnt sound like much, but to me, it appeared to be a huge difference.

Overall, it looks to me like iPad mini's will cannibalize sales from the ipad.

Re: Jelly Bean is here

Not needed for me, but really Cool to have the option.

Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 (on Jelly Bean) carrier unlock method in the wild

In case you happen to own one of Samsung’s 2012 flagship smartphone, either the Galaxy S3 or the Galaxy Note 2, you’ll be happy to hear that you can unlock them from the shackles of your carrier free of charge. And you can do all that by yourself, as long as your handset runs a Jelly Bean version.
Naturally, we don’t encourage you to go for such procedures in the first place, and unlocking a handset that was purchased with a new contract agreement will surely be frown upon by your carrier.
But in case you want to use the Galaxy S3 and/or the Galaxy Note 2 with another GSM mobile operator, or sell the phone to upgrade to a different device, you should definitely check out this method.
xda-developer owl74 found a hidden menu in Samsung’s software that lets you perform the unlock from your own home. The method works on the GT-N7105 but other Note 2 models as well as some Galaxy S3 versions will let you do the same exact thing.
Redmond Pie describes in detail the steps you need to take to unlock either handset:
Step 1: On your Galaxy Note II, launch the phone app and press these keys:
*#197328640#
Step 2: From the Main Menu, navigate to [1] UMTS > [1]Debug Screen > [8] Phone Control > [6] Network Lock > Options.
Step 3: In the Options screen, choose [3] Perso SHA256 OFF. Wait for 30 seconds after making this selection.
Step 4: Go back one step by pressing the menu key, and then back once. You should now again be in [6] Network Lock
Step 5: Here, now choose [4]NW Lock NV Data INITIALLIZ. Wait for one minute after making the choice.
Step 6: After a minute has passed, reboot your Galaxy Note II.

Have you unlocked your Galaxy Note 2 and/or Galaxy S3 yet?

I'm pretty sure Apple sacrificed the display quality to be able to build the Mini as thin and as light as possible. If it was running a high PPI display, it would need a much larger battery that would make the Mini physically larger and heavier. That would seriously put a damper on how great it is in hand.

Assuming Apple can build a 10" Retina iPad with a similar thickness and weight to the Mini, which one do you think people would buy?

All I know, is that Apple stock is falling off a cliff. Investors are losing confidence.

Their tech prowess is slowing, or at a standstill, their Retina trump card that they used to play isn't cutting it anymore, the reviews on the non Retina MBP are trashing it, the new iMac isn't upgradeable like the old one was, they saturated the US market, but are having huge trouble in the worlds largest smartphone market China. iPhone 4 is apparently outselling iPhone 5 last I heard? the mini is outseling the bigger iPad? Bye bye profits.

These guys are moving backwards.

Sunny, you've been saying similar things since the start of the thread. Apple has been doing just fine.

Nothing that you have said is particularly alarming.

PS, Apple's stock price has risen 73%, from the start of this thread until today.

When this thread was started, Android was no where near the 75percent market share they have today.

What's Apple down to, around a piddly 15 percent?

Android still continues to grow exponentially.

And one more thing.

Back when this thread was started, Steve Jobs was still around.

:laughing3:

Apple is down on market share, no surprise there given the proliferation of cheap pay as you go/$0 contract Android phones. A more interesting statistic would be profit share

And apple slow to respond as usual like they were with the mini ipad. they're rumored to bring out a low end iphone.

Tsk, tsk, no touch screen macs, when clearly, that's where tech is heading, no 4g laptops. And on and on.

No Jobs, no Apple

Re: Jelly Bean is here

Apple will regain some of that lost market share back with next quarter results. It was stagnant for the past couple of quarters because people were just waiting for the iPhone 5. In the US, it's already taken back the market lead. Plus China, the largest mobile market in the world, is finally set to receive the iPhone 5 sometime this month. The Android platform though will still be the market leader for the next few years in part because it has a number of mobile partners whereas the iOS is only available on the iPhone.

As for operating profit, no doubt about it that Apple is raking in huge amounts of profits over Android. Google took a different approach obviously by offering a free open source platform. With the most market share though, there's huge profit potential there for Android. Perhaps in the form of Google Wallet once it takes hold.

The other point to consider about profit share is that Google did not necessarily create Android to turn profit. It was a defensive move to prevent Microsoft from completely dominating the mobile operating environment and possibly locking out Google mobile web searches. At that time, Google viewed Microsoft as its biggest mobile threat. Apple was just a new player. The profit generated by the Android platform pales in comparison to revenue Google collects from mobile searches and advertising. As it turns out, Microsoft was asleep at the wheel and in came Apple with the iPhone.

People love the flashy things the Android OS does, but get scared with stuff like that.
But most of them signed a contract already, and just stick with it.....and enjoy the flash factor.

And in the back of their head, love how secure their BB's and iPhones were.

These permissions worry me a bit, but i also brush it off with you only live once(YOLO)!!!
Whatever happens..happens.

It's almost 2013.

Do you have a clue when we will have flying cars???

Even if you guess, will work for me?

Re: Jelly Bean is here

Looks like a Jailbreak will be available Dec 22nd for any iDevice running iOS 6.0 or 6.0.1(except Apple TV).

Re: Jelly Bean is here

Guess i should file a complaint with Garmin, the best selling brand of GPS, for sending me down an undriveable off road trail in PA.

I've been using Apple maps a bit here and there and it works just fine around Toronto.
