who's still riding? (in toronto)

was -15 when I drove thru Port Perry at 5 am this morning. My bike is safely away from the corrosive salt, But then again I plan to keep this bike for 10+ years so not trying to let rust out or spend big bucks down the road repairing exposed electronics etc.

I'm just preparing the bike to take it for storage tomorrow. Just trying to get a trailer from U-Haul...unless this 3C comes through tomorrow, then I'll ride it over. I don't think there's that much salt on the roads yet. I hope.

It had warmed up to -14 when I left home in Port at 7:40 AM (in my car. :( )

All the roads outsdie of the city are Salted, at least all of them heading North East of the city are salted.

I don't know why people are so concerned about salt. I think its just and excuse not to ride. I get that it is cold and the roads can be trecherous so that alone is a good reason to park a bike. My 2006 V-Strom has experienced all kinds of salted raods including a severe brining once. With 202,000 km on it and seven years there was no rust on any of the OEM parts.

I almost took my bike to work today for the first time but decided that I should first get more comfortable riding it before I attempt an early AM commute in the dark in very cold weather.

I live downtown'ish so the roads are *probably* ok, but Im worried about not seeing some ice until its too late, and then me not being proficient enough with the bike to properly deal with it.

Hopefully I can get out tomorrow when the sun is up for some more practice!

This can be a challenging time of year to be riding. There isn't enough salt on the roads yet to be "confident" that there won't be any patches of ice, and drivers are still re-learning how to drive.

I often find my riding is curtailed in December, but January and on is much easier and safer.

Probably varies from bike to bike.

My bike is over 27 years old and has a little under 100,000 km on it and the frame has some light rust on it. Having the entire thing stripped and the frame redone would be a massive project that I'm trying to avoid for a few years yet.

if you need help we can just load the bike up on my truck.

bah. Guess I'm done. Snow and ice on my road means I can't get out to the clear roads. I was hoping to flip the odo before putting it away too....soooo close.

I dont know about up north, but down here salt trucks tend to leave large piles of salt near intersections for some reason now.

Agreed to sell some parts off my bike so I too am done for now.

Rode about forty kilometers, from my place in Pickering to GP bikes and back Saturday afternoon. Took the 401 on the way home. Didn't see a single bike out there. Was about 0°, I was warm and comfortable, though my thumbs get a bit cold. No heated gear, but I do have heated grips. The roads were dry, but there's plenty of salt down. The most treacherous part of the ride was negotiating my own snow and ice covered driveway.

Changed the oil when I returned home. I'm likely done.

Just mind you don't get anywhere near a brine truck, that **** gets in your mouth and eyes

Anyone planning Port Dover in a few weeks? I have never been there and was curious as what everyone did for the winter months. Would you look like a big baby if you drove your truck down ? Or do you trailer down? Just askin.

Was out yesterday with my stunt bike. It was nice but wet. A lot wheel spin.

Probably for pedestrians crossing the street. Or just because they slow down for the turn and the salt keeps pumping at the same speed.

I seriously dislike freezing drizzle. Chilled through today.

Kept off the bike last week because of snow & temps, but not ready to put it away just yet. Rode to a meeting downtown this morning, then into the office. The only others I saw on 2 wheels today were cyclists. Weather is looking pretty reasonable this week, but I'll just take it 1 day at a time. Glad all the rain yesterday washed away all the brine they put down Sat evening!

I think this week looks promising. I rode in today. Only two of us when I parked on Front this morning.
