Who's still riding? (Fall & Winter 2024 Edition)

Saw a rider out yesterday. Downtown Toronto, as I was Turing onto Bloor from Castle Frank (after exiting the DVP).
Smaller KTM of some type. (y)

Hopefully soon, Spring is only a few weeks away!
Going up to double digits this wk

Edit: looks like it changed and only a high of 8c on Wed

Won't be long now with the temps going above 0c and rain forecasted. hope the snow melts quick.

I know it's splitting hairs but I think the right of way was parallel to Lorn and slightly to the east of Lorn, maybe around 10 or 20 feet. before it veered to the east to the wharf.
You are exactly right, Tom. The railway itself was on the property that is now the park, but the whole area was considered "railway lands."
There is presently a lot of pressure to develop that land, and a lot of resistance from the people who live here and enjoy that park, beach and harbour. Their main adversary seems to be the Town itself, which is really unbelievable. The parkland was deeded to the Town almost 100 years ago, as public parkland forever. Some politicians lately have suggested the park would be better used for condos.

Here, we are looking south across the harbour from the parking lot in the Google pic, and where i-WERKS shot his pics. This is in the late 1800s. You can see the railcars on the wharf, just beyond where you parked your bike. The ice house is in the background. On the right is the sawmill, which was later Grew Boats, then Bonnie Boats. I'm pretty sure it's the same structure that's still there, awaiting demolition. Your parking spot is just behind it.

That is for sure the perfect bike for near freezing temps. Lots of wind protection and a built in oven you are sitting on.
I recall being slow roasted in traffic sitting on mine in Cairns at 30+

Lots of good memories in that area. I spent several summers working for God at De LaSalle near Jacksons Point. Loved the lake do much that I moved back to live on the water for another decade.

JP harbour has been made over and a bunch of bougie condos across Lake Drive, other than that Sutton/JP are like I remember things from 40 years ago.

All very interesting, thanks for sharing. Also just another reason to hate on politicians.

I wonder how long the parkette along Lake drive is going to last, or at least the size of it. Seems they allowed a bunch of new development right next to it. I can somehow see that expanding. Though there are some crummy buildings on that street which should disappear first, but that might lose some of the area's quaint small town charm.

I never found anything in Georgina to be charming! The old Mansion house in JP was great, same for the Mutiny at the south end of the Wick, and way back the Red Bsrn hosted some bizarre after hours events. That was about all the character Georgina ever had - anll those great places are gone, now it’s mostly second gen wealth seniors in upscale Renos and condos.

You are so right. One of the reasons I stopped commuting in the summer with the stop and go traffic on the 404.

For me it's about the small town vibe and lower population, then the overall appearances, but that roughness does have some appeal. IF it goes the way it's looking with more building of condo's / townhomes like is next to the JP parkette, I think that vibe will disappear and it will become crowded town with no distinction, like Lakefield north of Peterborough, over filled and yuppies. (dating myself there)

Here is a recent survey, copied with permission. The "Dock" is the formerly federal wharf where i-WERKS' bike was parked. Standing on it looking out at the lake, you can see the Marine Railway before you on a clear calm day. The parking lot was the shipyard; the dry end of the railway, where ships in excess of 100 tons were built and repaired.

I'm pretty sure Grand Trunk took over the railway and later was taken over by CN here is a link about the original railway:

..Tom
Cool railway page. Thanks for the link. The station for the Toronto and York Radial Line is still there, at the corner of Dalton Road and High Street. Too bad the rail line isn't still there. It would be great to be able to hop on a train and go to the city.

Yesterday morning around 9:15 am I saw a 2012 generation Suzuki V-Strom westbound on Lakeshore somewhere east of Don Valley. Sadly I was driving. (:

Yesterday roads were dry when I got ready but minutes from the house it started to spit. I kind of hoped for some real rain to try and wash Novembers mud of my bike and pants. Also maybe a good test for the newer gear.
Got my wish but after a 1/2 hour of rain only my pants looked better. Carried on and the sun came out. It was gorgeous by the time I rolled back up the driveway.
