Who's still riding? (Fall & Winter 2024 Edition)

All this plus you can see their character come out in their eyes, some people light up like you've just shown them the way forward, others get sulky or bitchy like you just took all the wind out of their "I'm a reeeaaaalll motorcyclist" persona.

I'm still riding daily or near daily. This pic's from Wednesday night. Someone told me that it was "nuggets day", which apparently means 8 chicken nuggets for $2. I'm no economist but I know a deal when I see one.

There’s no chicken in those nuggets:)

As they say, sometimes it best to not know "how the sausage is made". If we all saw how a lot of foods are grown and processed we probably wouldn't want to eat 3/4 of our diets.

Check out the FiredUp gear, assuming they're still around. There was a group buy here 5-6 years ago when I picked up mine and they're both still going good. They're not traditional type vests where the vest itself keeps you warm, they're skin-tight thin material but with the heating elements built into them, so you put the vest on right over your very 1st base layer (T-Shirt or whatever), then you put your warm gear over top of the vest. They work awesome and it's like a nice warm hug all around, front and back. Keeping your core warm is the key to keeping the rest of your body warm.

Anyhow, don't diss direct-wired stuff that you have to connect straight to your bike. They generally work better and you won't have to fuss with batteries dying while you're riding, having to run on low power settings to stretch your battery life (instead of high power and staying warm), carrying extra batteries, etc etc. Yeah, there might be a little wiring involved, but the difference between using our FiredUp gear on the batteries vs plugging straight into the bike is probably 25% more heat.

Anyhow, I'm hoping to get out tomorrow for a little bit in the AM. Have been a bit under the weather the last few days and the weather sucked anyways so I'll take what I get at this point.
I totally forgot about Jimmy's heated gear venture, thanks I'll look into it.
My last interaction with him was for a pair of armored jeans when he was still involved with motorcycle garments

The reason I don't want anything wired is because I wanna be able to use the gear with other activities (hiking, biking etc.)
Also, I don't think the overall electrical output of my bike could handle it very well but that is just a guess

Sweating is actually really, really bad in cold weather, as that can lead to shivering when your body struggles trying to heat your now damp clothing.

Some interesting reading on the science of staying warm in cold weather. In the back country in extreme weather sweating can actually be deadly.

"Stay dry, stay alive"

Go wireless with batteries when you *need* to.

But go wired when you can.

The amp draw on a heated vest like the FiredUp is tiny, any bike can handle it without any issue.

To monitor my electrical draw from the heated gear, I recently bought this little voltmeter and it's pretty sweet.

Forgot to mention to clarify, the FiredUp vests came with 2 batteries. I just choose to plug the vest in while riding so I don’t have to stop to swap batteries through the ride, plus I often ride far longer than 2 batteries would last anyways.

Sorry @adri just noticed your sporty has forward controls. That would be a hard NO on the 883 if I ever did buy in.
Are you liking that aspect at all??

Maybe it's the cholesterol keeping you warm.😜

I see reports that York region has already started brining. Is it safe to assume Simcoe and Muskoka counties will also have started salting/brining?

That tank bag on that tank is a sight to behold. Looks like a face-hugger from Alien...

That said, as long as it had room for the delivery, then job done...

Magnetic tank bag so it goes on and off in two seconds. I get it though, the human eye is not used to (and maybe even not ready for) seeing Sportsters being used for every day practical purposes / running errands.

I've put my other bikes away for the winter, so the Iron 1200 is my does-it-all bike right now. In the past week she's been busy running the girlfriend to and from the subway station, picking up Gatorade when I was hungover Sunday, dropping off amazon returns, picking up my fast food/faux-chicken nuggets, etc.

My girl bike is becoming a little workhorse.

Oh, and my hot water heater broke so it's also taking my towel and shampoo/body wash to and from my parents house for showers pretty much every day. Ugh...

Oh it was a a must-have for me. I bought and installed them. I had mid-controls on my 2006 V-Rod for five years and they were fine because that's an overall bigger bike. But the Sportster is such a small little thing, with such a low seat height (so minimal seat to peg space) that mid controls started getting uncomfortable after five minutes. I think this only moved the foot pegs maybe 7" forward but I'm now much more comfortable.

There's another thing I'm... cautious to share, but, here it goes and we can put it to the myth-busters out there:

To me it feels like handling is easier with the forwards. And I totally get that that should not be the case for motorcycles.

The Iron 1200s a little different though, in my opinion, because on most motorcycles you have a gas tank you can lock your knees to, helping you to leverage the bike, but on the Iron 1200, with the stupid skinny peanut tank, your knees don't touch the tank, your knees don't touch anything, they just flail in the wind.

When I was on the highway with mid controls and the skinny tank, with my little knees flapping in the wind, it was like "oh, this reaaaaaally sucks". With my feet slightly more forward, my weight spread around a bit more of the bike, it makes me feel like I have a little more leverage to compromise for my knees/hips not being "locked in" like they would be on/around a traditional motorcycle/tank.

Maybe it's because I'm only 165 lbs. Maybe it's only in my head that I feel like I have more leverage over the bike with the forwards and can now use my body more to steer it... but then again, riding is 80% mental, so if all it really does is make me feel less shaky, that's still a plus, right?

Like I said, I'll leave it up to the myth-busters to pick apart that one.

Are the bars wider on the Sporty?

For street riding, body positioning is less important than track or dirt and leverage on the bars (the actual control that is in charge of steering the bike) becomes more important. With all else being equal, clip-ons will give you less control than wider-set handlebars.

Is that one readable in daylight? I bought something similar and it is unreadable in daylight, even if you shield it with cupped hands.
Yeah it’s pretty decent in daylight and definitely with cupped hands to shield it in bright sunlight.

I also mount it to the bars at about 90% tightness, so I can slightly rotate to face me a bit more when needed.
