Who's still riding? (Fall & Winter 2024 Edition)

What are some versatile heated gear items some of you like to use? I'm interested in a vest at a reasonable price that I can use for more than just riding, so preferably something with decent battery life that doesn't need to be plugged into the bike.

Cold weather riding and outdoor physical activities aren't fair comparisons; where one of these you are physically moving and generating body heat and the other you are sitting somewhat still and being blasted by windchill 🤷‍♂️

Other than decent jacket and pants an Evest (plug in) is really my only cold weather gear beyond a knitted dickie for around my neck.
The vest is golden!

Absolutely, but it always gets worse when the weather turns.
That doesn't sound right. Weather gets cold, peoples thoughts turn to snowmobiling and everyone is happy winter has finally arrived.

Ain't no one around here doing that. Barely enough snow to shovel the driveway..and yet....the drivers still turn into complete morons.

Indeed. When was my sled last on an open trail????

Set your sights higher.......and get a jacket.....warm arms too=better comfort.
Sturgess was selling these for $99. I have one. Maybe they still have some It works fine.

I rock a fleece neck gaiter anytime it starts to drop below 10deg on/off the bike. Not as clumsy as a scarf and really keeps the chill off

Them: "It's too cold, I put my bike away!"

Me: "I'm still riding"

Them: "You're going to crash, your tires are like hockey pucks at anything below 10 degrees!"

Me: "Yeah, no, that's really not a thing, just ride to conditions"

Them: Something something wet leaves on road, hard tires, slippery, danger Will Robinson, danger danger! (arms flailing)

Me: "Ride to conditions"

Them: "You can't ride this time of year, you'll freeze!"

Me: "Snowmobilers are still out there at -20, how do they do it?

Them: <crickets>

All this plus you can see their character come out in their eyes, some people light up like you've just shown them the way forward, others get sulky or bitchy like you just took all the wind out of their "I'm a reeeaaaalll motorcyclist" persona.

I'm still riding daily or near daily. This pic's from Wednesday night. Someone told me that it was "nuggets day", which apparently means 8 chicken nuggets for $2. I'm no economist but I know a deal when I see one.

Spent 40 dollerz, got me enough chicken nuggies to last me 'til Hawnakuh!

Check out the FiredUp gear, assuming they're still around. There was a group buy here 5-6 years ago when I picked up mine and they're both still going good. They're not traditional type vests where the vest itself keeps you warm, they're skin-tight thin material but with the heating elements built into them, so you put the vest on right over your very 1st base layer (T-Shirt or whatever), then you put your warm gear over top of the vest. They work awesome and it's like a nice warm hug all around, front and back. Keeping your core warm is the key to keeping the rest of your body warm.

Anyhow, don't diss direct-wired stuff that you have to connect straight to your bike. They generally work better and you won't have to fuss with batteries dying while you're riding, having to run on low power settings to stretch your battery life (instead of high power and staying warm), carrying extra batteries, etc etc. Yeah, there might be a little wiring involved, but the difference between using our FiredUp gear on the batteries vs plugging straight into the bike is probably 25% more heat.

Anyhow, I'm hoping to get out tomorrow for a little bit in the AM. Have been a bit under the weather the last few days and the weather sucked anyways so I'll take what I get at this point.

Rather sweat than shiver.

Sweating is actually really, really bad in cold weather, as that can lead to shivering when your body struggles trying to heat your now damp clothing.

Some interesting reading on the science of staying warm in cold weather. In the back country in extreme weather sweating can actually be deadly.

And on the 5th day he cometh down from the heavens and sayeth

"Thou shalt rideth in base layers."

And humanity was saved from damp clothing.
