Who's still riding? (Fall 2017 / Winter 2018 edition)

I’m officially done. Won’t be riding anymore until next spring. The last warm day seems like it’s going to be next Tuesday (Mississauga), but the forecast calls for rain. After that, weather is dipping. Good luck to all those planning to ride until the snow comes, stay warm and safe :)

It's been great 3-4 days each week and waaay better than taking the bus, so I'm gonna keep going day by day and avoid the wet.
I need to find some sort of neck cover, my Star helmet lets the wind up near my ears. Any suggestions for something windproof? And how do I stop it from falling down?

I've been wearing one of these over my neck/mouth under my helmet for a couple seasons. Super helpful for the neck warming. Over the nose sometimes ends up falling, and fogs up my windshield a lot.

I've been wearing one of these for about the last 50 winters:

Tie it as tight as you need to, they cost about one buck.

I bought one of these from Amazon, can be worn a few different ways.

I think there must be a big difference in things like Balaclavas, etc depending on the gear you use.

I haven't needed a balaclava or variation of a scarf for at least the last 8 years. My helmets since then have had a chin screen on the bottom that stops drafts coming up so my head is toasty warm in the coldest weather (helmets are made of a few inches of foam. There is no way your head should be getting cold thought the helmet.)

My cold weather riding gear from around 10°c down to freezing for rides of only and hour or two (ie commuting) is whatever my normal street clothes is for my destination (for work it's my suit dress pants and a cotton shirt with my dress suit jacket in my top case.) My "Warm n Safe" heated jacket goes over that as does a Fleece lined Soft Shell. My Roadcrafter R3 one piece riding suit goes over that and Heated gloves (from "Warm N Safe") keep the hands warm. The Heated jacket and soft shell as well as the Roadcrafter have decent collars that stop any draft (or rain, sleet, snow or ice) from getting to my neck

Below 0°c I add some fleece pants over my street pants and under the Roadcrafter, Down below about -5 to -8 I add another soft shell that that has worked for me easily down to -18°c, 0°f.

I don't bother with any of the "base layers" that skiers, etc. use. I find them useless as when I stop and have a coffee I get way too hot in them. I might have a T-shirt under my normal street clothes, but that really relates to waht I need to wear when I get off the bike.

Kind of bike makes a huge difference as my V-Strom blocks a reasonable amount of air from my body (nothing like a Goldwing though!) and the handguards do a great job of keeping the wind blast from my hands.

All in all I am quite comfortable ( I HATE being cold!) and can focus on riding not on keeping warm.

I like a windblocker around the top of the zipper ...the C3 is very warm and that was a real surprised. I don't like to do up the second zipper which makes the Scott jacket waterproof as its stiff so I end up with a small gap at the neck.

Misplaced my good neck warmer tho the one I have is okay.

All geared up today and the CBF decided be cold blooded :( .....on the charger now.

Now that i ride naked i get a nice constant blast of air on my neck, i'm also prone to fogging at slow speeds as i breathe primarily through my mouth due to a nose issue.

The balaclava keeps the air off the neck and my breathe off the visor, my head never really gets cold.

Good base layers are handy as they wick sweat away and i'm sure you know that sweat + cold is no bueno. I've been wearing them for the past month or so.

Base layers are not hot unless they are designed that way. ( Cold Pruf for instance ) Technical polyshirts are brilliant.

Cotton kills.

Find a thermal Buff. Generously sized, it's all you need. Stuff half down your jacket, the other half pulled up over your ears and just below your mouth.

Don't waste your money on proprietary moto gear.

Its a great cold weather helmet, can be stifling in hot weather due to how well it seals around neck.
For the record, the chin bar does no pop open when it strikes pavement. the visor dissappearde but helmet is solid.

Same results with a Shark Evoline. Chin bar mechanism still worked, but visor disappeared and chin vent plastic shattered.

Oh, and I'm still riding.

Thought I was done for the season but that sun today, 9oC...

Pulled the cover off the Fazer and got out there for a bit. Might do so tomorrow too.

Looks like winter will finally set in for good later this week so gotta get these last few rides in while I can.

Before figuring out my current gear setup I was a very happy user of the "foggy" breath shields and I had a balaclava that was thin under the helmet but much thicker elsewhere. It worked well but I am happy I don't need it now.

...and yet you recently commented about being too hot or almost too hot on a day that warmed up into the teens or close to them.
