Who is your trustworthy mechanic for your cage?

I'm my own mechanic and my fiancees, and my moms.

Only time i dont work on my own car is when its wheel bearing...I HATE replacing wheel bearings. My Maxima made sure of that. I purchased a 2002 Civic SIR, so far i've replaced a halfshaft ($100) when i bought it cuz the previous owner thought his clutch was shot when the car would move in gear. He was quoted $1500 so he dumped the car. 100 bucks and an hour later the car was back on the road. Wheel bearings all around, total cost, $400 with me doing the rears and a shop doing the fronts, front brakes, and a passenger door actuator were the only things i really had to fix. I installed coilovers but didnt have to.

Going on two years now and 60K. How can you tell me that having a monthly car payment is cheaper and better??! On one hand you 100% have to fork over certain cash, on the other hand, it may or may not happen that you have a major breakdown.

Here's an even better story. Fiance buys a 3 year old RSX base model, auto tranny. 6 years shes had it, oil change and a brake job is ALL that car needed in that time.

I throughly look it over every 6 months or so when i swap winter to summer rims and vice versa. No rust, no issues, rides good.

I've had numerous cars over the years, from Fords, Volvos, Nissans, VW's, BMWs and Hondas. Honda has never ever given me anything but a dead reliable car that kept on going for minimal cost outlay. Worst was the Ford. My Fox body stang, jeez if it wasnt one thing it was another, same thing with the VW.
BMW was an amazing machine that was head and shoulders over anything else in terms of refinement and road feel, but it had to be maintained and regularly.

I'm asking because I am looking to buy my first car. I just got a new teaching job last week. I'm anxious to get a reliable used vehicle, but I'm not confident to make the purchase alone. I would feel much more at ease if I had an expert take a look with me.

Is this a contract position? How long is the term? I would stay away from a lease or a car loan if you do not know how long the job will last. Also, have you checked out public transit? Are any of your colleagues car pooling? Another option to consider is moving close to work so that you can either walk or take public transit.

The point is that cars are hideously expensive to buy and to operate. If you can avoid that cost, it gives you more opportunities to save and build up your cash reserves.

I can recommend one garage, Peter's VW, near Dufferin and Caledonia (just north of Eglinton). They specialize in VWs but they will work on just about anything.

Thank for answering me, guys. Decided to just bite the bullet and get it done. 3 month warranty and the guy seems decent. Let's hope I don't get screwed again. I'm excited to finally have a car again :D

Might be a little bit late but... <2003 civic = rust bucket, all mazda = rust bucket, >2004 corolla&matrix = water pump fail, nissa = rust bucket + electrical fails

I'd recommend a >2009 or suzuki sx4 for all season killer (suzuki makes great cars you know)
Just saying

Not sure if anyone is still looking.

For my car, i've been going to Leonard at MS Auto located on Heritage Road in Markham. In-fact, his shop is located right across from Fawaz (of Racer5 fame) and his Speedworx shop.

Anyway, I've known Leonard for years. I first learned of him when I had my GTR (1990 R32), back when it wasn't too common importing these things. After that, i've been going to him with my German cars & Japanese cars alike. He can pretty much work on anything (He's owned Porsche's, S class Benz's, and currently owns a new GTR, as well as old GTR's, just to have the knowledge) and is pretty damn honest dude. If it's not necessary, then he'll tell you you don't have to.

So if you need a mechanic, Leonard is the man!

I just bought a used car from Royfoss at 7200 Yonge St. I was treated amazing, got a great deal on my car. I'm usually very untrusting of sales people, but thie guy here was realy good. If you're interested PM and I will give you the salesman info.

I still drive a 2000 Ford Focus ZX3. First owner. Still works though some non-critical systems have failed or are on the way out. Has seen better days for sure. Fords are pretty good vehicles I think, I'd buy the same vehicle again if they still made 2000s.

K, last question if you guys don't mind.

I got it fixed and everything seems fine, but I've driven 115 kms and the gas gauge still reads full. I know my car's good on gas, but it's not THAT good on gas.

I looked it up and it's either the gas gauge thing wasn't hooked up properly. But I also had gas sitting in there for a good 8 months, so it might also be gunk. Is there a solution that I can throw in there before I take it to the mechanic again?
