I'm my own mechanic and my fiancees, and my moms.
Only time i dont work on my own car is when its wheel bearing...I HATE replacing wheel bearings. My Maxima made sure of that. I purchased a 2002 Civic SIR, so far i've replaced a halfshaft ($100) when i bought it cuz the previous owner thought his clutch was shot when the car would move in gear. He was quoted $1500 so he dumped the car. 100 bucks and an hour later the car was back on the road. Wheel bearings all around, total cost, $400 with me doing the rears and a shop doing the fronts, front brakes, and a passenger door actuator were the only things i really had to fix. I installed coilovers but didnt have to.
Going on two years now and 60K. How can you tell me that having a monthly car payment is cheaper and better??! On one hand you 100% have to fork over certain cash, on the other hand, it may or may not happen that you have a major breakdown.
Here's an even better story. Fiance buys a 3 year old RSX base model, auto tranny. 6 years shes had it, oil change and a brake job is ALL that car needed in that time.
I throughly look it over every 6 months or so when i swap winter to summer rims and vice versa. No rust, no issues, rides good.
I've had numerous cars over the years, from Fords, Volvos, Nissans, VW's, BMWs and Hondas. Honda has never ever given me anything but a dead reliable car that kept on going for minimal cost outlay. Worst was the Ford. My Fox body stang, jeez if it wasnt one thing it was another, same thing with the VW.
BMW was an amazing machine that was head and shoulders over anything else in terms of refinement and road feel, but it had to be maintained and regularly.
