Who is your trustworthy mechanic for your cage?

Always a gamble in my opinion. You can do all the homework and you still get the short end of the stick.
Can't go wrong with a Corolla, even the odd Civic has a transmission issue.

Very much agreed! :)

For the record, there is no such thing as a trustworthy mechanic. Trust me... (lol and yes I am a used car salesman)

So should I trust the aforementioned sentence?

HA. Never trust a car salesman. :) ( kidding .. or am i?)

Anyways, why not try Dan from the board. Aka rogue_wolf.
He owns Heritage Motorsports at Keele and lawerence, and brought him my Mustang before buying it.
Looked it over, and never looked back.

Hes worked on all my trucks in the past as well.

I've bought a couple of used cars at a new-car dealership for the same manufacturer (one Toyota, one VW). Both were 3 year old lease return vehicles. The thinking is that the new car dealers usually keep the best vehicles to sell themselves. In both cases, I kept them until the foreseeable cost of keeping them on the road for another year was more than what the car was worth.

And for all the hype that Toyota gets and the bad PR that VW often gets ... bought the 'Yota at about 120,000 km and I'd had enough of it at 288,000 km (I never want another vehicle with an auto tranny), bought the VW diesel at about 95,000 km and sold it (still running well) at 462,000 km ...

WOW get the last word much. sounds like your one of them used car salesman that don't like to pay your bills when the job is done

I really didn't mean to offend you and I apologize if I did. I manage the company, but when it comes to paying the bills, that's coming out of the owner's pocket, not mine.
You'd be surprised how many times we get involved with customers even if they're issues are none safety related, just for the customer's satisfaction.

Thanks for all the advice. Should I look to get a carfax or carproof done on cars that I am serious about getting?

There is a 2001 Sentra that my dad found on kijiji for $3,250. It comes certified and etested, which is good news for me because I could really use a car soon. Sellers didn't leave a phone number so I e-mailed them.

How do you get the seller's to bring the car to your mechanic??

Tell the seller to meet you at the mechanic shop of YOUR choice. If everything checks out, you buy it.
Its that simple.

IF you're buying from a dealer he should provide you with a history report, carfax/carproof, I prefer the carproof report as it is more detailed and more reliable.
As the above posters mentioned, arrange a time that works for you and the seller to have the car checked out at the mechanic of your choice.

Good luck with the purchase, hope it works out.

Most VW I have come across are usually troublesome. Electrical issues, transmission issues etc... However, VW + Diesel + 5 speed is a bulletproof vehicle. Even at 500,000 KMs people will stay buy them for a pretty penny.

Does the front tire look flat to anyone else?
