You don't need a GPS to ride to work fool...I bought one of the Garmin 660LM's from Costco as well, just got to finalize connecting the wiring to my relay controlled power block.
So the GPS came in today. I installed it to the battery. I stuck the negative under the negative screw, and positive under positive.
After watching some youtube videos, I see people sticking the wires into the fuse box. Will I drain my battery overnight with the way I did it? (Obviously removing me GPS off mount after use)
I use folding paper map Ver 3.4 on my bike. Works great. Has never let me down, except that it is not back lit, so it doesn't work very well in low light conditions. I have no problem with the power drain. It is minimal, now that I have installed a new battery. Easily updatable with a new version that can be found at the first gas station in each state.
Also helps that I plan my route on my laptop, using MS Streets and Trips. Print off the maps from that. I've been on touring group rides where I have been near the back of the group. And the lead is using a gps. On those rides we have gotten lost. I'd be thinking to myself, why are we turning here. But I'd follow along anyway just to stay with the group. It also helps that I a very good grasp of maps and geography and have a very good memory.Old school is not always cool and most times very impracticable
So let's plunk you down in nowhere PA with a 1/4 of tank of gas .....
The problem with maps is ya gotta know where you are and in some areas.....not a hope in hell of navigating by your nose...just as likely to end up with banjos....
