Where to get a puppy?

Spoiler: It's not a GSD, so I don't care.

I read somewhere that the requirements for show standards of purebred German Shepherds have been responsible for basically ******* their hips up! Not sure how true that is but I’ve seen quite a few with back/hip/rear leg issues. Love the dogs. Very intelligent!

My buddy’s Shepherd has had horrible back/hip issues. Which sucks because he’s a wonderful dog, and is only 5-6 years old.

Just had a chat with my wife. She's all gun ho for an Australian Shepard...I still like the Beagle idea. But I'm coming around to the Aussie.

Any shepherd dogs need a ton of stimulation otherwise they get pissy. Lots of exercise etc.
There’s so many pluses to each breed and dog that it’s almost impossible to choose. It’s like a baby, you can do all the research in the world…in the end this living and breathing being will do it’s own thing and you have to work with it.

I would take the Beagle over the Aussie.
Maybe that's because I once had its cousin, the dachshund. Sort of a biased opinion.

I actually prefer big dogs over small dogs. But you do need to have the proper accommodations for them.

We have a medium sized dog and thankfully we didn't go with our initial choice. A bull mastiff.

Beautiful dog and very good with kids. But now having the medium sized dog, the bull mastiff would have been way too big. Plus that's how we found out my son is highly allergic to dogs. We went to see one and he started to have allergic reactions.

I've always wanted a dog, that looks like "The Littlest Hobo". (I think they are a mix of Shiloh Shepard and German Shepherd. Please correct me if I'm wrong). Wife wants a Golden Retriever.

So we haven't gotten a dog yet, because we can't agree.

The reason we bought ours is they like to spend a lot of their time snuggling, cuddling and sleeping…don’t require long daily walks…and don’t shed.

Low maintenance and reasonable energy levels means easiest for the MIL and mum to look after them when we’re away on vacay.

Also, owning a dog through the winter has its own challenges.

At the end of the day, choose a breed that fits your family life both now and going forward.

Those 2 beautiful dogs are low energy @Robbo ? Thought those were wound up like a top.

What breed is that?

My brother's got two Aussie's. Both are shitheads. To be fair, he didn't get them as puppies, but they crap in the house, and bark incessantly. Can't stand them, and I love dogs.

Oh wow that blows. We are hoping to adopt a dog <2 years old so will still be (hopefully) trainable.

So youngest is close to 2 now and the topic came up again (stopped looking when youngest came around).

Sis bought a Burmese Mountain Dog + Poodle and wife is now looking for a dog also.

She wants a fairly small puppy, one that doesn’t shed too much, and is good with kids.

For her the front runner is a Cuckapoo (wtf is that mean?). I’m leaning more toward a beagle or a terrier, although I would love a Hungarian Viszla. Beautiful dogs but require lots of energy to be burnt.

Our black lab (whom you have met) has finally settled down and is 80lbs of awesome.
