Where to get a puppy?

That’s a beautiful dog.

Thanks!

Our first rescue dog and it's been a good experience... Once covid-19 dies down, I want to introduce her to other dogs so the dog can learn how to play and be a dog.

Your pom looks like a a fox!

It's honestly not bad speaking to another roti owner in the same building. They're so lazy and prone to obesity and cling to their human(s).

I am a little concerned about dogism/racism because they'll see rotis the same way racists see humans of different color lol (e.g. I'm referring to a person who dislikes a dog due to the breed or characteristics racist, the same concept as human and human racism.)

Yes it does!

The dog was found in a dog market area of S. Korea and we adopted it

Nothing like it here in Canada

^^ Not mine

I have a designer Pomeranian mix rescue dog and it eats Costco dog food :]

Don't hesitate to give your dog Costco's branded food. The Kirkland stuff is made by Diamond and consistently gets 5 star ratings on Pet food Advisor (the dry, don't know about the wet). The senior lamb & rice @ $50 a 18 kg. bag outscores foods like Fromm and Blue Buffalo etc. that you pay $85-90ish for at pet food chains. Same with the biscuits. Ever since the residential guy at the HVAC place next to my work gave my dog one (he keeps them in his work van for calls with dogs) she goes off when she smells them. Milk Bone - sure, I'll take that. Kirkland biscuit - OMG! GIMMIE!

Maybe make up some dumb names and see if they get the hint…

Harrier x Bouvier = Hoover

Bulldog x pug = Bug

Chihuaua x Great Dane = impressive
Ugh.

I was walking my brother's pug a few weeks ago, run in to some lady. She starts with the small talk:

Her: oh is she purebred?

Me: Mhmm

Her: oooh, we have a Jug.

Me: :/

Catalan Sheepdog & Russian Toy = Cat Toy

I see beagle on the list - if that is a priority, the only breed I would suggest to get a puppy
they can be trained from very young to overcome some of the natural tendencies of the breed
but don't think you can ever completely overcome the 500 years of selective breeding as small game chasers

pros: adorably cute, loyal, loving, great with kids, they like everybody, smart AF
cons: smart AF, will chase a scent into another county, escape artists, interbreeding can causes health issues

a rescue beagle will almost certainly have come from a hunting owner situation
we had one many years ago, she was a fantastic doggie, but completely untrainable at 2 years old

if you like the look, lots of Heinz 57 hounds can be found with a more varied bloodline
my daughter acquired a 6 month old rescue hound mix 2 years ago
all the pros of a beagle and none of the cons, she is a great dog

Here I was looking at ‘Heinz 57’ dog like it’s a specific breed @J_F. Nice dog. Actually all the dogs pictures in the thread are beautiful dogs.

Thanks again everyone. This is why I love GTAM.

If a beagle catches a scent that leads it thataway, the dog is going thataway, end of discussion.
This is what I’ve read of beagles....and they like to dig....and they’re escape artists as per some comments here...

I've known some great beagles , and some that go walk about for 3 days or more. They are hunting dogs 1st and pets 2nd.

We were purebred Lab people for years , and I think they are a great dog , but the last one set my retirement find back 5yrs. ACL issues, allergies. I came from a respected kennel.

Current dog is an adoption, Boxer / Carolina dingo cross ( Yeah I had to google it to) , came from Georgia ( If you met my wife you'd understand) , and she has been our best dog yet. And she is dog 9 in our lives so she had some work to do.

My daughter has two dogs she adopted from the NWT from Aboriginal reservations , lets just say they have had a very hard time adjusting to life and the **** that goes on at a reservation would bring criminal charges anywhere else.

My sister works at a shelter in BC, and this is by far their biggest source of animals. It's triply complicated as the shelter is mostly staffed by white people, so coming into a res and telling people what to do and taking dogs has obvious complications and resistance. The stories are heartbreaking, including one dog who was kept on a balcony for over a year from puppyhood, fed through a window. Trying to rehome these dogs is really tough, as your daughter well knows, as it takes special people willing to do the work required. She describes that dog as almost autistic, where he really struggles to read other dogs and people, making simple tasks very complex.

It's a tough situation, as it's hard to judge, but also hard to find understanding without being patronising.

let's talk some more about beagle noses
doesn't need to be the end of the discussion

speaking of which
where is the animal nose expert there days?

Home - Redemption Paws is another worthwhile rescue.

Sorry Mimico, I checked the RP requirements, and they won't adopt to a family with children under 12.

"For liability reasons, we do not place dogs in homes with children due to lack of history. While there may be no obvious reason to believe that our dogs are not good with children, we will not adopt or foster dogs without a 100% safety guarantee."

My little guy. I never even considered a shih-tzu before. I thought they were like chihuahuas, very delicate etc.
Turns out they are quite sturdy, fast and playful. He is not a big fan of the heat but loves walking for hours in cooler weather and the winter doesn't phase him at all.
The don't have fur, they have hair that doesn't stop growing so they do need constant maintenance. My wife learned to do the grooming herself and it doesn't take long once you get it down.
The best part is his size, if my dog can't go, I generally don't go. This was more of a problem with my German shepherd.
I took my dog to a kennel once. When I saw her Sunday evening, she was so sad I said never again.
There are days I like my dog better than my kids...

Thanks for that. I saw that disclaimer and got sad as there were a few there that actually really interested my wife.

Will keep looking.

Friend of my very randomly sent me pics of a dog they just bought. Australian Shepard from some breeder for $1800.

He said they were planning on adopting a shelter dog but wanted a ‘clean slate’ type of dog. I understand the concern but I think we’re on the shelter dog train.

I don't think it's a one way or another situation is best scenario. Either buy from a registered breeder or adopt. Either way comes with pro's and con's. The only WRONG thing to do is support backyard breeders, while you might be providing a dog with a good home you are supporting an industry that cares nothing for the animals it breeds. I'm sure you'll find the right dog for you if you keep looking for him/her.

My dog is 11, when she’s at the park people ask if she’s a puppy. All she has ever eaten is Kirkland dog food (and a few scraps that occasionally fall off daddy’s plate)
