I bought my first gear locally at CycleWorld superstore in Scarborough.
I am in the same spot As the OP and I was going to check out CW in Scarborough, not so sure now after some of these comments. Why are you guys knocking the place, how bad can gear be that you'd call it junk?
as for insurance and rider training - I got insured with an M1 only at $750.
I went to Re-Gear in Oshawa this weekend a motorcycle gear consignment store. Saw their ad on Kijji. Picked up leather pants and two jackets for 400 bucks. Couldn't be happier.
The pavement doesn't care if you're a new rider or not, hurts the same regardless if you've been riding 1 day or 10 years.
Buy the best gear you can afford.
I purchased my first gear at CW Scarborough and the following year sold it all online. There prices are attractive if you're just starting out and looking for entry level gear.
I shop regularly at GP Zdeno Cycle ad RC. I also shop online at Canada's Motorcycle, Revzilla and STG You can save money by shopping online make sure to try o the gear first at a local store like Royal.
GP all the way for local to Toronto. They will actually go out of their way to get your business.
I'll be taking a few trips up to GP bikes this year just for a mooch about and I live in Kingston. Otherwise I get all my stuff online locally or more usually internationally. If I get the wrong size I've never had a problem getting my cash back from Kijiji either (because of how high the prices are locally usually).
