Vstrom is the Swiss Army knife or motorcycles and plenty of them out there. I’d just sit back and peruse what’s out there and find yourself a cherry ride and enjoy it when it happens!
As others have said, since you seem to be attached to your current bike, I wouldn't rush to get rid of it if you have the space and money to keep it. Personally, I would want to know wtf happened so I would be fixing it. Sure it will cost you some money but if you aren't trying to zero time it, just trying to fix actual problems, selling it running after repair probably makes you some money (or just swap engine/trans and get it back on the road quickly and easily and then tear down at your leisure).
A nice reliable low-strung ride like a wee-strom or CB500X will give you the security and effortless ownership you desire. They aren't for me, I like a little more soul. An appliance has it's place but if I'm taking on the risk of riding in public, I want more excitement and feeling to go along with it.

Know it when I feel it. For me, it Has to do with the sound and how it feels. Some I have absolutely no love for. Sure you are in the wind but the bike does nothing for me. Of bikes I've ridden, bikes like weestrom, cbr250 and vstar 650 fit in the boredom category. If I was travelling around the world, my priorities would likely be different.
Comes down to personal attachment really. If you’re asking though it’s likely time.
My good buddy has an 07 Streetglide he bought about 5yrs back taking a small loan to buy it. Always had an issue here and there with it. Then it started doing something similar to what yours is now and the bottom end grenaded taking out the motor. Pushrod in Oshawa convinced him they’d redo the motor into something great and charged him $13,000 to do it. It’s never ran right and he found out they used some used parts without telling him. Oil leak at the base of a jug among some other issues. But he’ll never sell it unless it’s for a 2022 green/black CVO SG.
Similar story to another friends anniversary edition Ultra. He’ll never sell it (but it was his dads bike previously) even though he as well had Pushrod hack job it up.
So I guess know when it’s time, and don’t go to Pushrod.
Sounds like a Wee would be an ideal addition to your garage.
The 650 Wee without luggage just nudges into the "lots of fun" category if you are willing to push it in the twists and keep the revs up...it's eager.
The other two have no thrill in the throttle but other benefits.
For utter boredom a road trip on a KLR650 just about tops all but then that 21" wheel hops logs just fine.
An SV650 might do as well but the ergos not as nice as the Wee.
To answer your original question I would the time get another bike is always now. The difficult question is do you get rid the current bike. Bikes are small you can always squeeze a second in the garage. Squeezing in number six or seven is where it gets tough......

Yeah there are some really bad hacks artists out there in the HD world. I've found 1 mechanic I trust, even then I only allow him to work on the bike if I am well over my head. But he's planning to retire, funny thing, he sold all his HD's and bought a V-Strom.
I plan to rip it apart myself. It's actually not that complicated, I just need 1 special tool which I ordered from Amazon. The teardown is about a 4 hour job to get to the source. It requires complete remoeal of the primary/drive and exhust system on the other side. Then you can basically pop out the transmission.
But what really calls my name because it’s just different and looks good and special. Reliability? Meh! That Guzzi Eldo looks the business. Newer bike, low miles. I’m sure you could ride it across Ontario without a worry in the world.
Such a cool looking bike. If he was dumping the HD, I would say give that a try (I have no idea on reliability) but since he wants to keep the HD, it definitely wouldn't be high on my list. Far too similar to what he has (and should have back on the road in time).

Something about the vStrom interests me, it's not looks, but it's the type of bike you can just jump on and go with little worry. Plus they haven't changed it drastically so they must have nailed it. At least that is my impression.
You are welcome to try mine out. It’s also orange so you will really get a sense of how the colour suits your needs.
I’m out near 403/Winston Churchill.

Thanks Shane, I've been meaning to reach out to get your thoughts on V-Stroms and if there has been much difference in them over the years. I think you switched to a different model recently.

I really like orange on the stroms..tho I also liked my white. Broke up the slabby look my first one had. Both of these were 2010s
both superbly reliable. Think that 2011 is gone now.
This is "okay".

sburns, I was in the same position as you. I got tired of fixing my old BMW and bought a NOS one year old V Strom. I'm very pleased with my decision.
Was that your HD I saw parked at the Virginia Beach Marina a couple of weeks ago?

Nice congrats, I take it the V Strom has treated you well!
Nope not me. I broke down last week in Cobonock. I have a 2012 FLHTP (Police Electra Glide) I haven't been doing long distance rides due to all the issues.
