When is it time to get another bike?

No, and yes. Japanese of some sort. From my car experience Japanese make quality vehicles. This is where I think I will go next for the bike.
gonna stick to cruisers or look at adv bikes?

Steve,

Get another bike and park the old one for a bit. You can always fix it and or sell it. Make it a winter project etc. those touring HDs can be overhauled and be good for another 100k. Heck, many will do an upgrade or 3 depending on the job needed to complete.

Plenty of nice bikes out there but. But, don’t be completely fooled as some of those reliable Japanese bikes have some bugaboos of their own. Ask some of those riding Goldwings and V Stars.

If you have a friend at a shop, ask. They will tell ya.

I really like that Orange Stratoliner at Apex but, it’s got 80k on the clock already and don’t think the paint is factory.

But what really calls my name because it’s just different and looks good and special. Reliability? Meh! That Guzzi Eldo looks the business. Newer bike, low miles. I’m sure you could ride it across Ontario without a worry in the world.

Easy spending other people’s money! Lol. Cheers!

Well I kinda already have a cruiser, so no need to go there or add another one. Yup ADV. I've wanted to explore some more off roadish stuff.

Actually I was already looking around and saw this:

Something about the vStrom interests me, it's not looks, but it's the type of bike you can just jump on and go with little worry. Plus they haven't changed it drastically so they must have nailed it. At least that is my impression.

Exactly why i bought the Yamaha I'm on. It's proven.

Like colour and that's nicely set up with farkles.
I bought a 2010 with 93,000 KM on it and all factory luggage for $3k certified and drove it 27k more and sold it for $3k.
They are very reliable rides. The only issue is the stator - there was a recall on them.

Also, the older Vstrom 1000's had clutch basket issues requiring replacements.

My usual criteria for replacing a vehicle is when impending repair costs for the next year exceed its current value. A broken transmission really tips that balance.

The weestrom is a great choice. V-Tom and shanekingsley have both put mega mileage on them.

I bought a DL650 Vstrom just because I couldn't resist the deal, I fell in love with the thing. It's gone 60K so far, all I've spent on her is regular ain't - coolant and hydraulic flush, oil, filters, and a chain. I average 21km/l (4.75l/100km) and I ride her fairly hard. I can easily go 400km on a full 20l tank when touring.

I wouldn't say it's good for hard-core off-road, but if you want to do dirt like Capreol to Shining tree on the Portelance and Gauthier Lumber Roads - it's perfect.

Farkles are widely available and relatively inexpensive, as are tires and maintenance supplies.

You might consider the DL1000 as well, almost the same - often much cheaper on the used market.

Get the little Vstrom and keep the Harley, even if it's just for now. If you decide after a while that you don't want the project you can sell it.

From reading your ride reports (which I enjoy) it seems like you just like riding a motorcycle and going places. It seems it doesn't need to be an HD. The little Suzuki is about as close to an appliance as you can get while still delivering big on the fun factor. I've NEVER met anyone who didn't enjoy the 650, but I have met a couple who weren't as pleased with the 1000.

Go out and buy the 650 now, and get back on the road enjoying yourself. Life's too short.

This is a 650 not the 1000...I would not want a litre V.
I'm with you. The people I've met have raved about the little V, and some had come off the 1000. I almost typed "downgraded", but from their descriptions and wide grins it sounded like it was the opposite.

When is the time???? As soon as you ask the question.

More seriously, what do you want to do? Ride or wrench?

If money was no object have the bike zero timed. You will have a brand new, old bike that will be worth a fraction of what you put into it.

I had a 2004 Safari van that was tired and looking beat but it was the only thing that did what I wanted. It would have cost $20,000 plus to zero time it and if I got into a crash insurance would give me a few grand.

What's the trade in value as it sits? If feasible, buy something new and ride it while you tinker with the wrenches or wait for the right buyer that will respect your old ride.
