when does every one stop riding??

Should be interesting 48 hours coming up....

Pick your poison, snow, sleet or heavy rain, it's got em all plus a jump to plus 8 on Sunday for a few hours

Toronto about to get munched....it's zero out so not sure whether snow or rain or sleet when the main show arrives in an hour or so

Hope no one was tempted to ride to the show...

All tucked away in the corner and the battery tenders on. Hibernating for the winter.

those who are still riding, what gear are you riding with and what are you riding? i don't see a lot of us out but i'm planning on getting out there in the next few days.. been looking at heated gear but haven't bought anything yet..im riding a 6v bike though so i need to run battery packs for anything im riding which is a bit of a PITA.

Check back in this thread around Nov. I believe gear was discussed.

good call. my mistake for not using the search better, I started reviewing the thread from the beginning sort of and some of the middle. I'll take a better look at the entire thing later this evening.
Thank you.

No biggie. I'm pretty sure it was this thread, anyway. There was also another about heated gear.
The sum of it is layers, merino wool base, heated gear, pinlock visor, keep hands and toes extra cozy. That's what I've read. Not brave enough to face this cold.

I'm reasonably hardcore but c'mon.....it's going to -16 daytime tomorrow.

I'll take a look around for another thread but that was pretty well what I was thinking/ had in mind already. Toes and finger tips are definitely a lasting cold painful memory and possibly something that I'll need to take care of immediately.

2 years ago I rode my R1 through the winter and it was definetly super cold occasionally but since I live and work downtown my commute is super short always.. I'm just riding a classic old very little bike for a bit though. I've never had any heated gear, just base layers and sometimes even ski gear over top of my riding gear. In the past it's taken me about the amount of time to ride/commute as it does for me to warm up the bike (assuming I'm parked outside) and get all my gear on. Which is super annoying but still great. I got tired of cycling for the last year and decided I needed to put a bike back on the road effective immediately. I'm waiting on a safety and a couple new parts but once I'm out again, I'm staying out there. Unless we get a serious snowfall, blizzard type weather or a lot of rain and a good freeze to make ice- that could slow me down, but knowing me I'll probably still ride. Nothing has ever actually stopped me before. Mind you I have taken a year or so off, but it was painful and had nothing to do with weather.
Happy Riding Guys! Shiny Side up!

-16 is the coldest I have ridden (in modern history) and that was without heated gear. It was very much pushing it for me and heated gear would have been welcome.

My issue isn't the temperature though, it's that I get a lot of lake effect snow, snow squalls, and snow blowing off the fields onto the roads in my area. And in the very cold the cars driving over the snow turn it into ice.

Experience has shown me that my bike falls over when the front wheel hits ice and picking it up all the time gets tiresome.

Couldn't believe my luck with the ride 2 days before christmas in my first year.. I imagine that isn't a common thing, but now that there's hard packed snow with ice underneath in the suburbs, I think I'm done. Too many random piles of hard pack with unknown underneath for street tires/non-dirt bike.

Maybe I'll get in a ride up/down Yonge St, but those typically aren't really fun other than counting how many bewildered faces around you..

Heavy textile jacket (with insulated liner), with layers for the lowerbody and heated grips would be a-ok until 70km/h + @-10 before windchill.

Took 2 rides yesterday when I picked up my bike from Rocket. No heated gear. Just top base and bottom base layers, ski/snow boarding pants and a thin Burton boarding jacket over my riding jacket with a heavy sweatshirt. Used my normal leather gloves with some ski/snowboarding fleece liners and normal socks with my normal riding boots. My body was fine but my feet and fingers were chilly. I put some heavy duty Underarmor 3 in 1 gloves over top of my riding gloves and that warmed my hands right up. However they hurt my fingers because they seperated my fingers too much and because of the shear size of all the layers it kept knocking my mirror.. I'm on the hunt for some heated gloves and socks that I can use with a battery pack for my little 6v pea shooter.

just saw a guy the other night, I couldn't believe it...He was on a KLR650 and the temperature outside was -10 not counting windchill.

That's nothing. Guy rode to northern Manitoba in winter. Yup, KLR650.

If you've got the tires, the (heated!) gear, and the chops to do it, it can certainly be done. I can't say I have any of those three! :lmao:

Was pretty nice riding today and yesterday afternoon/evening. I haven't seen anyone else out in the last week though. Tomorrow should be good, Saturday not bad either. Anyone out there riding with the heated VR-Pro gloves? I can't seem to find much feedback/reviews on them but they're looking pretty good right about now until spring.

What do you ride?

I'd gladly go out but I'm afraid of salt. Plus roads are still wet in places, so I'm more likely to spray some on the chain. Can't detach the chain to clean it like on a bicycle!
