What's The Deal With Canadian Beers?

I recently started working at a pub and I'm actually starting to enjoy beers again. After trying a couple of imports, I sort of "realized" how crappy Canadian beer is.

But I'm wondering if it's just a case of the grass being greener on the other side/it's the exotic/import appeal kicking in. Or is Canadian beer really that crappy(except maybe Keith's)?

You're also welcome to post what your favourite beer is and why. It's a whole new world for me again since I've sort of shied away from beers (towards liquor) these past couple of years.

I'm still trying every single one, but I'll get back to you guys when I figure out which one I like the most. But as of right now, I'm really liking guinness

If all you base your "Canadian beer" opinion is the crap Molson and Labatt (BTW they both are not Canadian companies anymore) comes out with then no wonder you didn't like Canadian beer.

Try some micro brew stuff. There's great beers in Canada, you just got to find them and stay away from the "Beer Store" best seller wall.

Guinness is always my beer of choice.... great flavour!!

As for the canadian ones, what your talking about are not really canadian. Your bar proly doesnt stock the micro brewery goodness that ontario and canada has. Muskoka beer is actually awesome!

Microbrews are where it's at. Depending on the type of pub you're at they typically don't serve local Ontario craft beer, but more and more are starting to pick up on it, especially downtown. Most LCBOs have a decent selection, or you can even hit up the breweries themselves and buy it straight from their store (Amsterdam Brewery is open on ****ing HOLIDAYS). If you're basing "Canadian" beer on Molsons/Labbats/Keiths/Sleeman then you're missing out on a lot of great stuff. Some of my favourite beers come from:

Amsterdam Brewery

Great Lakes Brewery

M
ill Street Brewery

The Bull was serving Nut Brown Ale on tap back in the mid 90s.

Last time I checked Guinness you drink in Canada is brewed by Labatts in Toronto. Imported recipe yes imported beer no.

A lot of people have import fever.

In Canada some people think Stella is great.

In the UK they call it "wife beater" and hardly anyone drinks it.

Could be wrong, but I think the draught cans you buy say "Imported from Ireland" on the can..

One simply cannot drink Guinness from a can.

A pint poured by a young lady in a kilt with big cans however is acceptable.

Haha! Well I do pour into a glass at home.. :-) Your version, however, is much better I must agree!!

And just as an FYI from the Guinness site..

Is it true that you get a much better pint of GUINNESS® stout in Ireland?GUINNESS® is GUINNESS® - wherever you are. We always use pure, fresh water from natural local sources for the GUINNESS® stout brewed outside Ireland. That said, in blind tests (with a bunch of highly cynical journalists) none of our sample could tell the difference between Irish-brewed GUINNESS® and the locally produced variety. All the GUINNESS® sold in the UK, Ireland and North America is brewed in Ireland at the historic St. James's Gate Brewery in Dublin

Creemore is a Canadian beer, and I'd rate it up there with any of the best beers in the world.

Steamwhistle also makes a beer that would stand up to international comparisons.

And for the record, the big-company beer in most countries is pretty ****. Heineken, Stella, Moretti, Fosters, Bud, Coors, etc.
